Mary Sponaugle Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Fray Sponaugle, 93, of Clarks Summit, died Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Mary was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Scranton, to Isabel and Willard Fray, the eldest of three children. She attended Traphagen School of Design in New York City, where she majored in fashion design, and she made a career as a professional dressmaker and seamstress. While working in Washington, D.C., she met her husband, Isaac Sponaugle, and they were married in Clarks Summit on Aug. 27, 1949. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, where she served as leader of the Women's Circle. She enjoyed working in her gardens, painting and sewing. Her daughters had the best-dressed dolls in their neighborhood.

Surviving are three daughters, Diane Carroll, Longmont, Colo.; Elizabeth and husband, Roger Bennett, Newton; and Holly and husband, John Doenges, Dalton; three grandchildren, Jessica (Mike) Thompson, Laurie Bennett and Ike Bennett; and great-grandchildren, Clyde Thompson, Margot Thompson and Lyla Bennett; and her foreign exchange daughter, Grace Villaman, of the Dominican Republic.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Jay Sponaugle; a grandson, Raymond Richard Bennett; and a granddaughter, Sarah Isabel McInroy.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Willowbrook and VNA Hospice for their kindness and care. Also, thank you to the First Presbyterian Church, Clarks Summit, and particularly to Sarah Ann Hosier.

A memorial service will be held in April at the First Presbyterian Church, Clarks Summit, details to be announced at a later date.

The family is requesting that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 300 School St., Clarks Summit, PA 18411.
