Nuncio Lombardi Obituary

Nuncio E. Lombardi, 94, of Moosic, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Grace, in 2005.

Born on June 28, 1929, in the Browntown section of Pittston Twp., he was the son of the late Dominic and Loretta Horan Lombardi. Nuncio's faith in God, devotion to family and duty to country was unwavering. After attending Pittston Twp. and Avoca schools, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force. After becoming a veteran of World War II serving in the occupational forces as military police in Japan, he went on to continue his service in the U.S. Naval Reserve serving as a senior chief petty officer in the construction battalion of the Seabee 7 and the Naval Reserves Seabee 21 during the Vietnam era.

After returning home from military service, he met the love of his life, Grace, and they were married on April 5, 1951. Along with his father, he began his business as the co-owner of Lombardi Coal Company which was involved in both underground and surface coal mining in both Lackawanna and Luzerne counties. He later expanded his business to include NE Lombardi Excavating and Terra Corporation. He was also the developer and owner of Moosic Heights Mobile Home Park.

Nuncio above all loved his family. We will forever be grateful for the endless support, wisdom and unconditional love he gave to us. He never told us how to live our lives but was a role model that shaped who we are today. He taught us that hard work, faith in God and commitment to family are the cornerstones of a successful life. Our family and friends are forever blessed with memories of big family holidays and summer picnics at the pool.

Nuncio was a proud lifelong member of the NRA, life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, DAV and the American Legion. He was longtime member of Queen of the Apostles Parish, Avoca. He was an avid Midwest big game hunter and after retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Grace. His hobbies were vast, being a master gunsmith and collector, knife craftsman and leatherworker. He was also an expert trap shooter and member of the Elysburg Rod and Gun Club, winning the state championship title in trap shooting.

He is survived by his son, Dominic, Moosic; daughter, Donna Molinaro (Chuck), Moosic; grandson, Nuncio (Laura), Moosic; granddaughter, Tiffanie McDonough (Christopher), Woodbridge, Va.; granddaughter, Danielle Kern (Nicholas), Baltimore, Md.; grandson, Dominic (Timothy), Moosic; granddaughter, Gina Grace Ferguson (Tom), Dunmore; great-grandchildren, Gerard, James, Carter, Nicholas, Graceyn, Lorenzo, Nole and Merritt. He is also survived by his sister, Theresa Caprari, West Pittston.

Nuncio was preceded in death by infant daughter, Mary; son, Gerard; grandson, Jason; brother, Paul; sisters, Mary Diane Marco and Joan Connelly.

The family would like to thank Dr. Guy Fasciana, Dr. Michael Baloga, Superior Home Health and Compassionate Care Hospice for their exceptional care throughout Nuncio's illness. A special thanks to his favorite nurses Jennifer from Compassionate Care and Lucy and Janice from Superior Home Health.

Family and friends are invited to attend Nuncio's funeral, which will be held Saturday, March 9, at 10 a.m. in Queen of the Apostle Church, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca, to be celebrated by the Rev. Phillip J. Sladicka, pastor. Interment with military honors will follow in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Moosic. Friends may call Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church.

Due to the Lenten season, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Queen of the Apostles Church.
