Edmund Koury Obituary

Edmund William Koury, 93, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016, at his residence.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, at Saint Pius the Tenth Catholic Church. Entombment, with Military Honors, will follow at Guilford Memorial Park in the Mausoleum.
Edmund was born Oct. 16, 1922, in Alamance County, NC, the son of Lebanese immigrants: the late William Naoum Koury and Victoria Koury. He attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary and graduated from Burlington High School as the Student Council president. Edmund attended NC State University and was a member of the ROTC. During World War II he was drafted into the U.S. Army Infantry Division, where he attained the rank of Captain and fought bravely in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war ended, Edmund returned home and completed his education at NC State University, obtaining his Bachelor of Science Degree in Textile Management. Post graduation, Edmund moved on to assist his father in the family business, Koury's Dress Shop, in Burlington. He later joined his brother, Joseph, as an officer with Kirkman and Koury, Inc., which ultimately became Koury Corporation. Edmund was responsible for operating the company's Multi-Family Division. After Joseph's passing, Edmund stepped into the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors and remained active until recent months.
Edmund was a gentleman in the truest sense. He was a very generous man who quietly shared his means with others without seeking acknowledgement for doing so. He was very devoted to his Catholic faith and had an immense love for his family. Edmund will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor, and for being a humble and modest man who enriched the lives of all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Koury was preceded in death by his sister, Yvonne Koury Salloum; and his brother, Joseph Stephen Koury.
He is survived by his sisters, Josephine Koury Zoghby of Mobile, AL and Delores Koury Mack of Mooresville, NC. He was a loving uncle to 19 nieces and nephews and a great uncle to numerous great-nieces and nephews, all of whom he thought of as his own.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Blumenthal Rehabilitation Center, Affordable Family Care, and Piedmont Home Care for their assistance in caring for Edmund during the past few months.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel, 515 North Elm Street.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Springs Prayer Center, 477 Grogan Road, Stoneville, NC 27408, Saint Pius the Tenth Catholic Church, 2210 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27408 or to St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 109 West Smith Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.

What a special man Edmund was. I loved listening to all the true stories of his life. He was so interesting to listen to and all the things he did amazed me so much. I just love a good story and everyday he would have one for me. I loved to hear him sing Frank Sinatra songs and he did daily when we were at work. He would ask me, well does that sound like Frank or Bing and I would say, of course Frank. He loved to work and loved to visit the apartment complexes we owned. When I first came to work for Koury, we were in the mall and he made a point of walking all three floors and speaking to everyone he knew. He definitely was a people person. He never failed to acknowledge anyone that came in the office while he was standing there. He was a very kind person and always wanted to help if he thought you needed any help. He was a ray of sunshine that I will never forget. He will always be missed and I will never forget how wonderful he was toward me and to everybody that worked in his company. I know now he is smiling and looking down at us and giving us his wink and that sparkle in his eye. He loved to work and loved his family dearly. I know I will miss him and think of him daily when I go to work. God Bless you Edmund Koury!

I just heard of the passing of a very kind man who lived a wonderful life. I have lived at Yester Oaks Apartments for over 12 years and Mr. Koury loved this property and the residents that lived here. He left a true legacy and will be greatly missed.. I have nothing but respect and admiration for this man and my prayers go out to his family and the Yester Oaks family he leaves behind. Mr. Koury will be greatly missed... his beautiful smile and spirit will now radiate the Heavens! Rest in peace Mr. Koury... you will always be in my thoughts everytime I look out at this beautiful property which I have been privileged to live and the beauty that your love of nature and all her beauty entails...

Words cannot express how much I will miss Mr. Edmund. He was such a special friend! We shared so many memories and good times, so much love and laughter! He never lost that special spark in his eyes, that zest for life (zest for WORK but also an appreciation for good looking cars and women.)
One morning years ago I was near his house on a very early walk before coming in to work and I had a feeling of concern, that something might be wrong with him. I walked to his front door then the back door but of course he couldn't hear the door bell ring, so I went into the back and peered through the picture window. He was sitting in his recliner with the tv on very loudly, glancing at his watch for when it was time to leave for work. I left without him even knowing I was there...
I will always think of him when I hear a Cole Porter or Frank Sinatra song. We are so thankful and blessed to have been part of his extended family.
