Jack Spencer Moorhead, age 93, passed away October 6, 2023 in Provo Utah surrounded by family. He was Publisher of the Grass Valley Union Newspaper for 19 years, 1975-1994.
Jack was born October 7, 1929 in Ardmore Oklahoma to Elmer Buddie Moorhead and Georgia Elizabeth Jones. Following graduation from University of Oklahoma , he joined the US Navy in 1948 and served until 1952 during Korean War. While employed by Swift Communication, first in California's Bay Area, he was promoted as Publisher to The Grass Valley Union 1975. Under his oversight, the paper moved from its original 111 year-old downtown Grass Valley Mill Street location to its current Glenbook's Sutton Way in 1978. Its success was magnified under his oversight as Western Nevada County's primary source of news and community involvement.
Following his retirement, he continued his professional service impact on this community serving on: Nevada County's Fairs Board of Directors; Music in the Mountains, Hospice of the Foothills and Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation.
He is preceded in death by: his parents and his wife of 35 years, Elizabeth (Beth) Moorhead who passed in 2022.
He is survived by: daughter Sue Moorhead Helper, Utah, son Garry Moorhead, Paradise CA, stepsons Garry and Terry Smith of Roseville, and six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Friday, November 17 at Hooper and Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City starting at 1:30 p.m.
