Joseph Angelo Comforti, Jr.

Joseph Angelo Comforti, Jr., 74, beloved husband for 36 years of Ann (Vengruskas) Comforti, of Hobart St., Westerly, passed away at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence on Wednesday, June 25, 2014.
Born in Westerly, he was a son of the late Joseph A., Sr. and Mary Comforti.
Joseph graduated from Westerly High School and then entered the U.S. Air Force where he became a Communications Specialist. He served for four years and was honorably discharged in 1961. He was employed at Pfizer from 1963-1980 and concurrently worked as a Westerly Police Reserve where he served as Treasurer. A licensed electrician in RI, MA and CT, Joe then worked for New England Power Service Co. for 18 years until his retirement in 1998.
He was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the Calabrese Society. Coaching was a passion for Joseph. He began his tireless volunteer career as a WYSA Board of Director serving from 1992-2009 in various capacities as fundraiser; Recreation, Competitive & Tournament Director; Referee Coordinator; Coach and Referee. He was certified as a Referee for high school girls' varsity play in R.I. During the same time period, Joe also volunteered with the Westerly National Little League Board of Directors where he was President from 1993-1995, also serving in a multitude of positions including fundraiser; umpire in chief; player agent; and coach (Panciera's Major League). Joe could always be found at signups and helping in the concession stand. During Joe's three years as President, he was successful in seeing to completion Trombino's first T-Ball field.
He loved playing Bocce, bowling, going to the firing range and especially coaching his sons in soccer and Little League.
In addition to his wife, Joe will be dearly missed by his seven children, Joseph M. Comforti, Stephen M. Comforti, Susan Anderson, Sandra Pearson and Christina Gentile, all of Westerly, Mary O'Bryan of Middletown, RI, and Dawn Vaillancourt and her husband John of Tiverton, R.I. He also leaves behind his fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. In addition, Joseph is survived by two brothers, Stanley P. Comforti of Vernon, CT and John J. Comforti of Westerly, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, James Comforti.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4-8 p.m., in Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. Relatives and friends are also invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Tuesday, at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church, 111 High St., Westerly. There is no procession to the church from the funeral home. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow in St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly.
