Douglas Schuler Obituary

DOUGLAS JERUARD SCHULER Douglas Jeruard Schuler, beloved father, grandfather, boss and a kind and loving man left his earthly home on December 15th, 2015 only 12 days after his 78th birthday. Douglas proclaimed Jesus as his savior prior to his death and is now resting peacefully in the arms of the Lord. Douglas was born in Arcata, California on December 3, 1937 to parents Douglas Hazen and Alice Marie Schuler. His father attended Cal Berkeley with a double major in physics and mathematics. His mother graduated from Humboldt Teaching College (now Humboldt State University). He grew up on the "101 Turkey Ranch" with his grandparents Anker and Jennie Baadsgaard. To the end, his last choice was turkey for Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. Douglas was preceded in death by the love of his life for over 50 years, Dorothy, his adopted daughter Dorcas, and 2 infant grandsons Damon Rasella and TJ Hershberger. He is survived by his only sibling, Mary McCain of Redding, 4 children and their spouses Dawn (Bruce McCay), Daphne (Tim Hershberger), Douglas Jr (Tami) Schuler, and Dana (Melissa) Schuler. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Douglas was a dedicated, hard worker and served as a foreman for the Humboldt County Road Department where he was employed for 37 years. He was very much appreciated and respected by his employees and by the administration of the Road Department. He received a certificate of merit from the governor of California for his tireless work in the 1964 flood. Douglas and Dorothy were both very involved in the community for many years until the disability of Dorothy. Both were involved in the McKinleyville Chamber of Commerce, both served as officers. They were instrumental in the creation of the McKinleyville Bridal Trail. Doug was also a member of the McKinleyville Lion's Club for several years. Douglas was an avid fisherman and clammer and often spent his vacations as a commercial fisherman. He was a gifted woodworker and donated much of his work to friends, family and acquaintances. He donated numerous flag boxes to the Veteran's Administration for the families of deceased vets. He always respected those who served for our country. Douglas was a quiet, humble and generous man who donated much to charities. His son, Doug, remembers that he would often pay for the meal of a stranger when he went out to dine. He never asked for recognition for what he gave. In the words of his granddaughter, Brittany McCay, "I have learned a lot from you. Your love towards grandma was real and selfless. Your kind eyes always observed family gatherings with joy, in such humility. Just to watch us filled you with joy, you never needed to be the center of the room. You gave, provided and loved so gently and quietly, but so strong. Because there is real strength in these things." Douglas passed away in his own home surrounded by loved ones and will always be remembered for his unselfish love and gentleness. Dawn, Daphne, Doug, Dana, and families, We were saddened to hear about the death of your father. You have all experienced such loss of loved ones in the last few years, and we are sending you our prayers and condolences. We're thankful that we have been able to reconnect during the wonderful family reunions that we had in Red Bluff, and thanks to your families, in Humboldt Co. Doug impressed us with how family oriented he was and how much he loved all of you.
Our sympathy, Sandra and Karen

Dear Schüler family,

Doug was a wonderful man a great equipment operator and most of all a great crew leader. I was sad to hear he had gotten so sick I prayed he would get better but his Lord had other ideas, his work here was done. Doug also had a fun side and could tease you and have a poker face when doing it. When I think of Doug I would describe him as a honest hard worker, he never asked you to do something he wouldn't do. Doug would also pitch in if he saw you needed help something I will never forget. R.I.P. my friend you were a faithful servant.

Dear Schuler Family: I was so sorry to read of Doug's passing. I'm sure we all remember him as such a kind, unassuming & gentle man who would be eager to do anything to help. He was the backbone of our "coastal family reunions" & seemed so happy when we could all get together. I deeply regret not keeping in touch more frequently, but please know I am thinking about you all & wishing you peace & comfort. Your fond memories will sustain you all through this time.

With love & sympathy.....
