Dear Sligh family,
I just posted a picture of the 7th grade class at Stewart School in Arcata to Mr. Sligh's obituary. I was a member of that class in the 1960-61 school year. Mr. Sligh was our student teacher assisting our teacher, Mr. Cesaretti, who is on the bottom left side of the picture (I am the third row up from the bottom, the girl on the far left). Mr. Sligh is the first student teacher I ever remember having in a class. My memory has faded over the years but I remember he was always very nice to the students. Mr. Cesaretti was one of my favorite teachers, sort of a larger-than-life personality with lots of energy and enthusiasm. My memory of Mr. Sligh was of a more soft spoken, gentle and kind man. I thought he was "old" when in reality he was probably about 24. I guess that was the perspective of a 13-year-old girl. He wore suits, he had to be old!
What amazed me about Mr. Sligh was that for years after being my student teacher he still remembered my name and I am sure the names of other students as well. I might see him around town or at a school function and he always knew who I was. When you think of the hundreds, probably thousands of students a teacher meets over the course of his career, that is an amazing feat.
I am so very sorry for your loss. From reading his obituary it sounds like he had an amazing life of service to his family, his students and to the community. I hope your wonderful memories of him will sustain you in this difficult time.

We all, Dan, Brian, Celestine, and I, have some very pleasant and admiring memories of "Mr. Sligh."
I appreciated Neal´s affinity and respect toward his students - and others - that was always evident.
Thank you for writing Neal´s story and sharing it with us.

Mr Sligh
I was a student of yours as was my older sister. You left such a huge impact on us both. My sister even looked you up a few years ago and met with you. What a great human being you were, and how lucky were we to have known you.

Sharon, our prayers and condolences go out to you. It is a pleasure to have been Neal's friend. We always had the greatest respect and admiration for both of you through our years in Humboldt County. Neal always made very positive impression on everyone. He will be missed.
Best to your entire family.
