Joseph McClary Obituary

was born April 13, 1927 in Dawson, New Mexico, and died at home on March 26, 2011 in Eureka, California. He was 83. Survived by his wife of 34 years, Sonja McClary; sons, Harold (Norma) McClary, Bruce (Patricia) McClary, and Brian McClary, daughter, Linda (Jerry) Rogers; and his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Carol (Dwight - deceased) Myers. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Joseph and Alberta McClary; his sister, Marcia (George) Beall; and prior wife, Carolee McClary. Bob served in the Pacific during WW II with the U. S. Navy, was a member of the Naval Reserves, the Navy League and a life member of Veteran's of Foreign Wars. Bob relocated to California in 1951 to work for the Division of Highways, State of California, and retired from Cal Trans as District One Surveys Engineer. During this time he spent time in Saudi Arabia running a survey program for a private contractor, which he enjoyed very much. After obtaining his private pilot's license, Bob was often seen around Murray Field. Bob and Sonja enjoyed many journeys to a variety of different places, including many visits to Hawaii. They returned bi-annually to the Dawson reunion where Bob was born; a virtual ghost town that was brought back to life when former residents and their families met to share memories. Friends are invited to attend the memorial being held at Sanders Funeral Home, Eureka, on Tuesday, April 5, at 1:00 p.m. Please sign the guest book at www.Times-Standard.com, click obits.

Dear Sonja,
I will never forget how cute Bob was when he came into the shop with reindeer antlers and candy canes. He was Bobby Reindeer wishing us a Merry Christmas. I think of "Bobby" every year during the holiday season.
My heart goes out to you and the family.
Sincerely, Jill McCarthy

Even 34 years after moving away, I still recall McClary as one of the best guys I ever worked for. A true friend that left us better for having known him.
