Matt was born in Ceres, CA, May 1, 1956, and passed away unexpectedly in Fortuna on September 7, 2007, at the age of 51. He moved to Ferndale, CA, with his parents in 1964 where he attended Ferndale Schools and graduated from Ferndale High School in 1974. He then attended College of the Redwoods and HSU and graduated with a degree in Psychology. He married his wife Berwyn in 1979 and had they two children, Julie in 1981 and Garrett in 1982. During those years he worked at Bank of Loleta and later became self employed in business consulting and real estate restoration projects.
Matt spent his youth in Boy Scouts attaining the level of Eagle Scout and in 1994 received the Silver Beaver award. He also loved playing basketball. You can still find his high school team picture hanging in the ice cream parlor in Ferndale.
Many of Matt’s days were spent driving around town with his big, white dog stopping in at real estate, lending, and title companies. A workaholic at heart, he always had numerous real estate and consulting projects demanding his attention at one time. Though he was so busy, he always made time during the workday for lunch with his wife, friends, or a quick phone call to his children.
Matt was also part of Campton Heights Baptist Church for many years where he served as a Deacon and the high school boys’ Sunday school teacher. He was always willing to do whatever needed in Church or to help anyone in need. His other pastimes included guns, coins, and classic muscle cars.
Most of all, Matt was a true example of what God calls a Christian man to be. He taught his family and those around him to trust in God through all things. He was a strong foundation to lean on and he will be dearly missed for it. He firmly believed and shared that faith in God comes first and will pull you through all things.
Matt is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Eugene and Dorothy Wheeler; and his paternal grandmother, Lola Court.
He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Berwyn; his daughter, Julie and her husband Eric; his son, Garrett and his wife Georgia; his parents, Donald and Nancy Galt; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
Matt can be remembered most as a loving husband, father, and son, as well as a trusted leader and mentor.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday September 11, 2007, at 12:00 noon at the Campton Heights Baptist Church, 1655 Cecil Avenue, Fortuna, with interment to follow at Sunrise Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Goble’s Fortuna Mortuary, Fortuna.

To Matt's Family,
I was so shocked to hear the news. Matt will be greatly missed. He helped me and my family with a home that had been in the family for years and with the 911 events, I couldn't handle the stress. He was a truly caring individual and sent me before and after renovation pictures of Grandpa's house. I will never forget his kindness. I wish your family all the best.

I never met Matt, but came to know him through business connections. He was unfailingly cheerful and very pleasant to talk with -- obviously one of those rare "really great guys." My heart is glad to know of his faith, and so very sad for the pain and loss being experienced by his family and friends. My prayers are with you.

I didn't really know Matt later in life, but I did have the pleasure of knowing him when he was a little boy. Matt was my neighbor and best friend for a couple of years when he lived in Arcata before moving to Ferndale. Matt was a great friend, the kind you remember for life. It was a big loss to me when Matt moved. My heart goes out to all the family and friends that are suffering in this time of loss.

Dear Family -
When we see that us old folks are passing on, it's not a big surprise. Seeing that Matt had passed away it was a shock. He just seemed so young, so healthy and just full of life.
Matt and I became friends when he was running the old Reid & Wright Mill in Arcata, and I had the mini storage close by. Even after he moved on it was always great when he'd stop by and visit before I retired.
Matt will be truly missed by us all, and never forgotten. How happy we are that he will be with our Lord and Savior. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely;
Kirk Cesaretti
