Alan Whittaker Obituary
WHITTAKER, Alan Charlesworth, 90, of Midlothian, Va., died Tuesday, March 1, 2022, 10 days shy of his 91st birthday. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Alan spent the majority of his youth in Bogota, N.J. A proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served the country during the Korean War, working on weapons plans while stationed at Langley Field Air Force Base. Following his honorable discharge from the military, he attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where he received his undergraduate degree. Later, he attended Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, N.J., where he completed his M.B.A. Alan began a career in hospital administration while working at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, followed by a position with Englewood Hospital in Englewood, N.J. In 1973, he became Administrator/CEO of Commonwealth Doctors Hospital in Northern Virginia, which was later acquired by the Fairfax Hospital Association. Upon departure from the hospital system, he found success as a realtor in the Philadelphia area and later, in Richmond. He was especially proud of his volunteer work over several years with the Virginia State Police Fraud Division. Alan was preceded in death by his dear wife, Ruth (nee McKinley); precious grandson, Paul Alan Begovich; and parents, John Albert and Elizabeth Burritt Arlt Whittaker. Left to cherish his memory are daughters, Ellen Begovich, Linda Darden, Janet Moulton and Gail Whittaker; sons-in-law, Paul Begovich, Jimmy Darden and Rocky Moulton; grandchildren, Ashley and Eric Moulton, Emma and Jay Darden and Connor Whittaker; stepson, Clay Parker; and stepdaughter, Carin Parker. A memorial ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2022 at Bliley's - Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Road. A private interment will be held in Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia at a later date. The family wishes to thank the many nursing aides, hospice and hospital employees who provided their dad with care and compassion.
