With heavy hearts, the family of Barbara Duling announces her passing after 84 joyful years. She was born in Ilion, N.Y. to German immigrants, Hedy and Herman Brause. Tucked away in their cottage in upstate New York, she developed a lifelong love and fascination with trees and birds - inspired by the iconic pines and loons of the Adirondacks. This love led her to join the Audubon and Herb Societies and later, spend every second she could outdoors.

Her love for learning extended from the natural world to the arts. After moving to Richmond, Va., she attended architectural tours held by Edwin Slipek, foreign film showings at the University of Richmond and the Virginia Opera. Her family members will always remember her exclaiming, "Look! Look!" from the passenger seat to point out something that filled her with wonderment.

It was in Virginia where she met her late husband, the Honorable Judge Robert Duling who shared her passion for hiking, gardening and traveling to the cottage. Barbara spent much of her time visiting Germany to see relatives, attending weekly breakfast clubs at McLean's and Nick's Roman Terrace, and going on Road Scholar trips here and abroad.

Barbara is survived and loved by her children: Norman and Karin (Daniel); and her grandchildren: Danielle, Eric (Cat), and Mia. She is starting her next big adventure with her parents, Hedy and Herman, her brother, Herman, and her husband, Bob.

A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to your preferred charity or to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.
