Carroll Gilbert Obituary

Carroll Hall Gilbert, Jr.

November 9, 1935 - June 5, 2025

Carroll Hall Gilbert, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, departed this life peacefully on June 5, 2025, at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean Hale Gilbert. Together they built a life with four children, Melanie Gilbert McCrary (Mac) of Clemson, SC, Wanda Gilbert of Spring Grove, VA, and Brian Gilbert (Daniela) of Richmond; 10 grandchildren, Drew (Kate), Courtney, and Kendalee Marcus, all of Charlotte, NC; Courtney Waller (Dan) of VA Beach, Caleigh Gilbert of Portsmouth, MIrranda Gilbert of Reston VA, Dawson Jarrett (Cole) of Boykins,VA, Olivia Gilbert of Spring Grove, Benjamin and Gabriela Gilbert of Richmond; and three great grandchildren, Charlotte and Anniston Marcus of Charlotte, and Pierce Gilbert of Portsmouth. Carroll was predeceased by his parents, Carroll and Thelma Gilbert of Ruckersville, VA; one sister, Carolyn Cannone of Fairfield, CT; and one son, Carroll Hall Gilbert III, "Chip" (Janet) formally of Chesapeake.

After having graduated high school in Stanardsville, VA, Carroll attended both Berea College and Virginia Tech, where he earned a B.S. in Dairy Science in 1958. Directly after college, Carroll held many positions at Southern States Cooperative where he retired after 42 years of service in 2000 as the Director of Member and Institutional Relations. After retirement he continued his representation of South States where he chaired and vice-chaired the Board of Directors of ACDI Agriculture Cooperative Development International, and through this affiliation he and Jean had the opportunity to visit many countries throughout the world.

His lifelong faith began at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Ruckersville, VA and continued with years of commitment to Derbyshire Baptist Church in Richmond where he served in many roles including deacon, Sunday school teacher, and volunteer on countless committees. Carroll was a man dedicated to his faith, his family, and his community, and was generous to all throughout his life. He enjoyed hunting with his hunt club, fishing, boating and spending time with his family at the river, and volunteering for many years at Henrico Doctors Hospital.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Though he is no longer with us, Carroll's, Dad's, legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of Carroll's life will be held at a memorial service at Derbyshire Baptist Church Monday, July 7, 2025 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Spring Hill Baptist Church, Ruckersville, Va., or Derbyshire Baptist Church, Richmond.
