Charles McFall Obituary

MCFALL, Charles L. Jr., 75, slipped peacefully away September 21, 2023, after a period of declining health with the same courage and grace with which he lived his meaningful and fulfilling life.

A native of Front Royal, VA, and a Randolph-Macon College graduate, he was predeceased by his parents C. Lyle and Nancy Lee Riley McFall.

His loving family include Karen M. McFall, his wife of 31 years; his children Martha Gray McKinney (Chris) of Jackson Hole, WY, and Chuck McFall (Alli) of Aguadilla, PR; grandchildren Noah and Mason McKinney of Jackson Hole and Indie McFall of Aguadilla; and his sisters Pepper Blankenship and Jeannie Simar and their families.

Born May 8, 1948, Coach McFall enjoyed a 43-year career at Collegiate School where he served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, goodwill ambassador, and unwavering advocate for kids and colleagues.

During his 21-year tenure as head varsity football coach, his teams amassed a record of 127-66-1 and won four VISAA and five Prep League championships. In 19 years, his varsity baseball teams won one VISAA and five Prep League titles. McFall Hall, a cafeteria and multipurpose building on the Collegiate campus, was named in his honor in 2013. He was inducted into Collegiate's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.

More important than records, championships, or personal honors, Coach McFall embodied all that is good in high school athletics.

He was a loyal friend possessed of a delightful sense of humor, a wise and trusted mentor, a sportsman of the highest order who never saw a contradiction between his fierce competitive spirit and fair play, and a skilled tactician and strategist who had a gift for summoning the best from his athletes, empowering his coaches, and placing all of them in positions to succeed.

In his time away from Collegiate, he found great pleasure hunting and fishing with friends and enjoyed the peace he derived from family trips to the beach. He also held dear the relationships he formed in his many summers serving as a counselor at Camp Virginia.

Charlie McFall lived with purpose, decency, resilience, and humility. He treated all whom he encountered with respect and in so doing earned the universal admiration of the Collegiate Family and competitors alike. He cared deeply about his friends, he cherished his wife, children, and grandchildren, and he has left all of us an enduring legacy of selflessness, dedication, and kindness.

A celebration of Charlie's life will be held later in the fall. Please consider donations to Collegiate School or the Alzheimer's Association.

Charlie and I were friends and fraternity brothers at Randolph Macon. I played a year of basketball at RMC and several years of baseball, but what I really enjoyed was Intramural football, catching beautiful passes thrown by Charlie McFall. Charlie was simply a delightful guy, always friendly and supportive. Great smile, full of energy, and quite an athlete. What a wonderful career Charlie enjoyed at Collegiate! So sorry I haven´t seen him since our years at RMC! I was so pleased to read the memories of Charlie shared by Shawn Mooney! What a great bunch of guys we had at Randolph Macon in `67-`71. We´ll miss you, Charlie.

I met Charlie in the fall of 1966 when we both enrolled as freshman at Randolph-Macon College. He and I played basketball together on the R-MC
freshman team. We were friends from the beginning. Charlie was what you would call a natural athlete. Whatever sport he tried he excelled in. Furthermore he was the type of person who never complained and never talked down to anyone. He had the personality of a saint. Wonderful guy; I only wish I could have seen more of him. His players were indeed lucky to have him as a coach and a role model to follow in their lives.

I met Charlie in 1965 at Randolph-Macon Academy, a college preparatory school in Front Royal, VA. He was an all-around student both in academics and athletics. He excelled in baseball and football where his father Lyle was the head coach. He was also an outstanding basketball guard. I was a math teacher and coach of the junior varsity basketball team. (By the way, the JV´s has a record of 9-1!) It is no surprise that Charlie went on to greatness at the Collegiate School.

I first met Charlie when he walked into my 5th grade math classroom at Collegiate. I will always remember that huge smile and piercing eyes. He watched an old western one night that had a character named "Ritter." The next day he told me that "Ritter" reminded him of me. From that day on I was always "Ritter" even when we would see each other at recent Collegiate events. He also coached me on the baseball and football fields. He had a special gift in that he could relate to young people, especially young men. Many Blessings to the McFall family during this difficult time and may Charlie rest in peace with our Lord!

My thoughts and prayers to the family of Charlie McFall. I worked and coached with Charlie in the late 1980"s and early 1990´s and enjoyed every minute I spent with the man. I am heartfully sorrow to hear this news. I haven´t seen Charlie in nearly 20 years but every August I think of him with the beginning of Football season .
God Bless.

I met Charlie when I worked at Camp Mont Shenandoah where his daughter attended. I also knew Charlie as I was an Athletic Director also. Charlie was such an honorable man and I enjoyed spending time with him at National Conferences where he was so much fun. My sincere sympathy to Karen and his children.

Charlie was a wonderful colleague and gentleman for Peggy Rada during her teaching years at Collegiate. And I grew to value his gifts to the school during my tenure on the board. Collegiate is a better place because of his legacy. Love to the family. Heath Rada

I met Charlie at Randolph Macon in 1966, when we were both 18 year old freshmen living across from each other in Thomas Branch dormitory. Charlie was a class act then, and a great guy to be with. We both went our separate ways after graduation in 1970, but I was glad to read about his wonderful life, and I'm sorry I didn't stay in touch. My condolences to his family, and God bless you all.

We were blessed to move in next door to Charlie & Karen in 2000. Charlie was always willing to help - and teach - our boys (& me!) whether it be something about hunting, football or cutting boards in his wonderful workshop. I grew up with neighbors like them & am so grateful our boys experienced the same. We miss him greatly.

I first met Charlie in a duck blind on the Mattaponi River in I think 1972. We were both guests of a mutual friend and, as it turns out, became lifelong friends. We have shared many hours in duck/goose blinds and dove fields in not only Virginia but Canada and even Argentina. We spent nights in crazy places and had so many adventures it is hard to imagine! And since his kids were age staggered with my kids, we frequently did family "outings" together. All to say in spending so much time together we learn so much about each other and have become like brothers. We shared many thoughts and times.I will miss you so badly Charlie...God bless, your buddy, bill "Boudreaux " bolin

Charlie was in my Sunday School classes, youth group, and choirs all through our growing up years at First Baptist Church in Front Royal. I remember him as being funny, kind, and a leader. He and his entire family were an integral part of our church family. My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family.

I was so lucky to know and work with Charlie. We were also fortunate that he coached both of our boys. His love for life and his humor are an inspiration to all. So many great stories!
