In 1979, he became Director of Public Utilities for the City of Richmond, and subsequently led Troy State University's Public Administration program for military and civilian students in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Dan served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, St. Edward Council, having also achieved the Fourth Degree with the Knights of Columbus.

A devoted student of Irish history, Dan had dual citizenship with the Republic of Ireland.
