Daniel Smith Obituary

Daniel Spencer Smith

September 8, 1949 - July 27, 2025

Daniel Spencer Smith, 75 died on July, 27, 2025, after a brief but valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, Hartley W. Smith and Horace L. Smith III; and his older brother, David R. Smith. His survivors include his wife, Cheryl Suddith Smith; his daughters, Whitney Smith Conrad and Ellen-Ashton Smith Jackson; his sons-in-law, Scott Conrad and Scott Jackson; and his grandchildren, Maddy Fagan, Will Conrad, Spencer Conrad, Clay Conrad, Seth Jackson, and Tatum Jackson; his sister Cabell Smith Longan, and brother-in-law Bill Longan and their children Molly Rouse and Robert Longan.

Dan was born on September 8, 1949, in Richmond, VA. He was a proud graduate of Collegiate School, Class of 1968. He attended Hampden-Sydney College and graduated from the University of Richmond. He began his professional life at a local surgical supply company, General Medical (now McKesson) and later purchased a travel agency, Travel Advisors, INC., which he owned and operated for three decades. As his retirement years approached, he merged with Covington Travel. He was a former member of West Richmond Rotary, NoInc. Investment Club, 55 Golf Association, Society of Cincinnati, Jamestowne Society, Sons of the Revolution, and the Richmond Cotillion.

Dan was an avid sports fan, especially of the endeavors of his children and grandchildren. He spent countless hours on the sidelines, pool decks, and in bleachers cheering on his beloved family members. He was also passionate about golf and travel. He spent many happy afternoons on local courses as well as a few international ones. His golf buddies were among his dearest of friends. Dan also enjoyed waterfowl hunting. He was well-traveled; he particularly enjoyed New Zealand, an African safari, as well as small ship cruises with Cheryl and his friends.

Dan was a devoted and loyal husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He was an honest business man and a charitable community member. He was always gracious and polite, but his most important legacy is fierce love and compassion for his family and friends.

I´ll never forget how supportive Dan was as I planned a trip along the Fairytale Road in Germany with a grant from Collegiate. It was he who encouraged me to create my own itinerary when nothing being offered fit my mission. I know he showed the same enthusiasm in all aspects of his life.
My condolences to the Smith family, especially my Collegiate colleague, Cheryl.

Cheryl, We were saddened to learn of Dan´s passing. We will always have fond memories of the times spent together for Maddy´s field hockey games and graduations. We could always find him in the bleachers for the U Penn field hockey games and he was so proud to take the train from Richmond to Philadelphia to support Madison. We are thinking of you and your family during this difficult time. Fondly, Barbara and Jim Fagan
