Debi Mukherjee Obituary

MUKHERJEE, Dr. Debi P., passed away peacefully March 6, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bandana; sons, Avik (Vik) and Shomik (Mik); daughter-in-law, Akta; grandchildren, AJ (12), Addy (10); nephew, Kush (California); and numerous other relatives abroad. He was born October 26, 1939 in Calcutta, India, as the third of 11 children, and immigrated to the United States in 1963 to study chemical engineering. He earned both master's and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering from M.I.T. and an M.B.A. from UConn. He was a strong proponent of hard work. His career started at Goodyear in Akron, Ohio and then moved to Davis and Geck in Danbury, Conn. for 15 years, where he was best known for creating a once popular surgical suture known as Maxon. From there, he worked briefly in Memphis, Tenn. and Boundbrook, N.J., before settling in Shreveport, La., at LSU Health Sciences Center as an associate professor in the Orthopedics department, retiring at age 73. He loved his family very much, both here and abroad and was a devout Hindu. He spent countless hours assisting his kids with sports and academic extracurriculars and sacrificed much for them. He developed a regimented lifestyle, as well as a soft spot for home cooking and chicken biriyani. In his later years, he suffered from Parkinson's disease and moved to Richmond in 2020. His family would like to thank the staff and providers at Sunrise Villa Tuckahoe for their care.

Wonderful and friendly gentleman. Often met him family in Brookfield, Connecticut at my brother Iqbal's home.

After over a year, I just found out about Debida's passing. He was such a kind and caring person helping the newly arrived foreign students. I was one of them and had the good fortune of knowing him. I will never forget how he and his wife used to give me rides to grocery stores and take me to their home during weekends for dinner. Those little things were very big and meaningful to new foreign students like me. I know he has a very special place in heaven. Rest in peace, Debida.

Debi Mukherjee was truly a man of distinction. Devout to his Hindu faith, his wife, children, family, and friends. He brought light and joy to so many of his colleagues at LSU. He will be truly missed by us all but his spirit will remain in all of our hearts.
