Dorothy Pauley Obituary
PAULEY, Dorothy Ann, passed away peacefully at home on May 15, 2021 at the age of 91. She was predeceased by her four older brothers and their wives, John (Molly), Art (Anne), Bill (Lil) and Gus (Mag); and by her younger sister and her husband, Lorraine (Larry). Her beloved husband of 71 years, Stan Pauley, passed away in November 2020. Her 66-year-old daughter, Lorna Pauley Jordan, passed away suddenly in February 2021.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Katharine Pauley Hickok (Gene); two grandchildren, Kate Hickok Stark (Bryan) and Adam Hickok (Taylor); four great-grandchildren, Anderson, Sylvia, Mallory and Genevieve Stark; and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and came to Richmond with her husband and her two little girls, Kathy and Lorna, in 1954. Together they built a family and left a legacy of caring for the community and its many organizations and causes. Always a student, she received her Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Art History from Virginia Commonwealth University.
She brought her love of the arts to service on the boards of many organizations, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Richmond Symphony, the Virginia Opera Advisory Board, the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts and The Children's Theater of Richmond. For years she sang with the Richmond Symphony Chorus under the Direction of the late James Erb, and she sang soprano with and was a former president of the Chorus of Alumni and Friends of the University of Richmond (CAFUR).
Dorothy was a past-president of the Jenkins Foundation, the Retreat Hospital Corporation and she served on the boards of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and the New Virginia Review.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, The Country Club of Virginia, The Woman's Club and The Tuckahoe Woman's Club.
Dorothy was an intellectual at heart, a voracious reader and a generous soul. She and Stan traveled the world, enjoyed a full and meaningful life together and took great comfort and happiness being surrounded by family.
She will be missed by all who knew her and appreciated for the joy she brought to every conversation, the interest she had in the lives of all with whom she came in contact and the warmth, energy and caring that so defined her life.
The family is very grateful for the kindness of the many caregivers from SeniorBridge who supported Dorothy during her declining years, including Rosa, Joanne, Aretta, Alba, Carolyn, Ardrina and Joy. We also thank Regina who offered her medical support and care management through the years. These kind and caring people made it possible for Dorothy and Stan to continue living in their home which they had loved for 44 years. For 67 years, they lived together in Richmond, Va., where they enjoyed every day of their very full lives.
Services are private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Richmond Symphony, 612 E Grace St. # 401, Richmond, Va. 23219.
