Eric Hurlocker Obituary

Eric Wayne Hurlocker

March 17, 1965 - May 23, 2025

Eric W. Hurlocker, 60, of Richmond, VA, died peacefully at home with his family on Friday, May 23, 2025, following a half-decade battle with kidney cancer. His family includes his wife, Andrea (Andi) Bistline Hurlocker, his son, Jay Hurlocker, and his daughter, Laynie Hurlocker, all of Richmond. He is also survived by his sister, Tamara Hurlocker Eller (Trip) of Concord, NC, two nieces, Emily and Cassie Peele of Durham, NC, his father-in-law, James Bistline, and his brother-in-law, Chris Bistline, both of Carlilse, PA.

Eric was born in Lewistown, PA to the late Thomas and Constance Hurlocker. After growing up in Carlilse, PA, he came to Richmond to attend the University of Richmond. It was here that he became a Spider for life and never looked back. After Eric earned both his undergraduate and juris doctorate degrees from U of R, he embarked on what would become a long and successful legal career with a focus on energy and transactional law.

Eric gained his initial experience with several large law firms and then took his legal expertise to two large energy companies. But for him, the real joy in his legal career began in 2012, when he co-founded GreeneHurlocker. Eric was instrumental in developing solar policy and legislative initiatives throughout the mid-Atlantic and particularly in Virginia. When he took an early retirement in 2023, he received several life time achievement awards including the Virginia Renewable Energy Alliance (VA-REA) Leadership Award for Career Achievement and the CHESSA Solar Visionary Award. Creating, with his partners, a scholarship at the University of Richmond ranked among Eric's proudest career achievements. This scholarship at the TC Williams School of Law encourages students with diverse backgrounds to enter energy and environmental law careers.

While Eric loved both his career and his Spiders, his family always came first. He and Andi were true partners in life, happiest doing everything together and fortunate to be able to travel, hike and spend quality time at their home in Nelson County. Despite juggling a demanding work schedule, Eric never missed a minute with his kids when they were young - even finding time to coach soccer and field hockey teams. As they grew older, their relationships only got closer. They enjoyed football games and concerts together, but mostly they simply enjoyed each other's company and the endless family laughs that came with that.

A close second to his family was his University of Richmond friends and PiKA fraternity brothers. Eric was at his happiest, surrounded by his friends, beer in hand, tailgating, telling the same old stories, rooting for a Spiders' win and notoriously yelling at the refs, "He's been doing it all year!" His group of friends is second to none and is truly a chosen family. No man had truer "brothers."

Eric was unique in his ability to make everyone he met a friend. His family fondly says that anywhere they went, no matter how far they traveled, Eric would run into either a friend from U of R or someone "he did a deal with." He leaves behind a hole that will never be filled, along with a million funny memories, sayings and stories. We are all so much better to have known and loved him.

Memorial services will be held on Monday June 2nd, 2025 at 2 p.m. in Canon Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond with a reception following on campus. In lieu of flowers Memorial Contributions can be made to DrivenToCure.org or to the GreeneHurlocker scholarship at the TC Williams School of Law.

Andi, Jay, and Laynie - I am sorry I was unable to attend the services yesterday, I'm sure it was a difficult and yet wonderful day - Eric is very much loved. May this bring you strength and comfort for the days to come. I will miss my brother, as will many others - but we will all smile when reminiscing about our time together.

I miss Eric dearly as a friend, partner and solar warrior. He was always such a creative, warm, witty and thoughtful human being, always quick to humbly defer credit to others. He helped us introduce the first solar PPA in Virginia in 2010, then the solar Self Generation Agreement, and many other financial innovations to help our company and the Virginia solar industry push past barriers to solar in Virginia. His legacy lives on...Sol Invictus!

A friend in deed! Knowing Eric for only a brief time, he developed a lasting friendship and professional guidance that will last for many years to come! He made many things last, and was a family man to the highest degree! He will most certainly be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Eric´s passing. I am forever grateful for the scholarship I received due to GeeenHurlocker´s generous donation to the University of Richmond Law School. It was a pleasure meeting Eric several times while I attended law school. He made me feel a bit more confident and at ease in my decision to enter the legal profession. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Andi, Laynie and Jay,

My deepest sympathies to you all.

You don't know me, but I feel like I know you all. I met Eric about 13 years ago, shortly after the creation of GreeneHurlocker. Eric was a great man, a great lawyer and loved his family immensely. I never once had a meeting or a call with him (and there were many) where he didn't talk about one or all of you and everything was always positive. He was so happy and proud of his family.
I had the good fortune to have breakfast with Eric last October. That was the last time I saw him. True to form, we chatted a bit about what brought me to Richmond (energy stuff) and then a lot about the families.

Eric will be missed by all who knew him. I wish you the best as you get through these very difficult times.

This is heartbreaking. I was assistant to Eric when he was at Hunton & Williams, and he was a great attorney and nice man.

I knew Eric through his work in the solar power industry. He helped us innovate ways to finance solar that made solar power more affordable for schools and businesses, changing the energy landscape in Virginia for the better. Talented and accomplished in his career, as a man, he was warm, kind, and helpful.
