Herbert Collins Obituary

COLLINS, Herbert, 91 of "Green Falls" in Caroline County, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 21, 2023. Son of the late William Joseph Collins II and Dorothea Campbell Collins, Herb was a preservationist, historian and author; but more importantly, he was a proud "son" and strong advocate of Caroline County. After graduating from college, Herb served in the United States Army before beginning his long career at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. He is credited with founding the National Postal Museum as well other entities there. He retired in 1991 as Curator Emeritus, Smithsonian Institution. Herb authored over 20 books during his lifetime and had others planned. He was a passionate supporter of the Caroline Library, the Caroline Historical Society and Historic Port Royal, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1995. He donated his time, talents and treasures to each. He especially loved and had a soft spot in his heart for the Town of Port Royal and he will be forever remembered for his generosity to Historic Port Royal, Inc. and its mission. In addition to his parents, Herb is also preceded in death by his brother, William Joseph "Joe" Collins, III. He is survived by several cousins and numerous friends that he considered family.

A viewing and visitation will be held on Thursday, October 26th at the Bowling Green chapel of Storke Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 27th at 11 a.m. in the pavilion at Greenlawn Cemetery, Bowling Green. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Historic Port Royal, Inc. P.O. Box 233 Port Royal VA 22435. www.storkefuneralhome.com

Herb and my husband were distant cousins through the Walden family, from which my husband is descended. We first met in 1983 at Greenfalls and spent a lovely day with him. We kept in touch over the years and we last saw him in 2018 when I introduced him to my grandson Sami who was, and still us, enamored of US Presidential history. Herb had an amazing good and full life and he gave so much to the world. Though we hadn´t seen him since then we always called him for the major holidays to offer our best wishes. I only learned today of his passing when I tried to call to wish him a Happy Thanksgiving. Our hearts are very heavy now but his memory will always be a blessing. Gid speed Herb.

I advised Herb (pro bono) on some issues relating to historic preservation easements and the rights of family members to visit graveyards on property they no longer owned. Herb and I were
distant cousins through the Tod(d)
family. He had a wealth of interesting stories, about which he
regaled friends and family. I last saw him at the Port Royal Museum,
to which he was quite generous.
Godspeed.

I will always cherish the time my cousin John Wright and I drove down to Green Falls a few years ago to visit Herb to discuss family history and the history of Caroline County. Herb will always be an inspiration, and may his memory always be a blessing. Love you, Cousin Herb! Rest in Eternal Peace. Cousin Tom Duckenfield, Washington, DC
