Jo Witt Obituary

Jo Ann Gentry Witt went to be with her Lord in the early morning hours of January 23, 2026. Born on April 29, 1936, in Washington, D.C., and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Jo Ann was the epitome of a classy Southern lady.

A 1954 graduate of John Marshall High School, she met her husband of 66 years, Robert Michael Witt, through a chance encounter on a pay phone at the University of Richmond. Together, they built a life in Florida and Alabama before returning to Richmond in 1967.

Jo Ann was a dedicated detail oriented professional and an asset to her many employers which included banks, law offices, psychology offices, William Byrd Press, Virginia Blood Service, Virginia Lottery, and VCU School of the Arts.

Personally, she was a gifted pianist and seamstress with a lifelong passion for books, concerts, plays, and the opera.

A woman of deep faith, she was an active member of several churches throughout her life serving on multiple committees. Also, a firm believer in community involvement, after retirement, she volunteered her time through Senior Connections assisting fellow seniors with financial management and volunteered as a reading buddy at a local elementary school.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Anna Belle Williams Gentry; her husband, Robert Michael Witt; her brothers, William Henry Gentry and Robert Thomas Gentry; and her son-in-law, Stephen Hall Aigner. Her legacy of grace and humor lives on through her survivors: Daughter, Carolyn W. Aigner, Grandchildren, Aharon Mundy (JW), Adam Aigner (Kelly), Andy Aigner (Melissa), Brother, Richard E. Gentry (Jean), Nieces, Lee McAllister (Greg), Cindy Nunnally (Paul) and Jennifer Gentry, Nephews, Jay Gentry (Deb), Rusty Gentry (Susan) and Tom Gentry (Lori) and their families. All of these relationships were incredibly important to her. She was deeply loved and her presence in our lives is irreplaceable. Services will be private.

I enjoyed JoAnn as a friend and her hairdresser for many years. We had great conversations and laughs together. She loved helping others and family members.

Dearest Caroline and family.
What a life well lived. Your mother experienced.
Your family was our first family to meet when we came to Richmond 53 years ago and that relationship is still strong today.
We love you...
