John McDowell Obituary

John H. McDowell, a financial advisor at UBS Financial Services, died Saturday, May 6, 2006 at the age of 74. He is survived by Stasia "Mitzi" McDowell, his devoted wife of 38 years; his loyal dog, "Zoro"; and a host of friends and clients which he counted as his extended family. Mr. McDowell grew up in Orchard Park, New York, near Buffalo, and was a graduate of Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio. He spent the first two years of his career serving in the United States Army. Mr. McDowell was stationed in Korea and later moved to Japan, where he served as a statistician in the Far East Army headquarters. He then returned home and spent two years working for Dun and Bradstreet in Buffalo, New York. Mr. McDowell worked another five years for the investment banking firm of Doolittle & Co. before accepting a job in Richmond, Virginia as an analyst for State Planters Bank in 1964. Mr. McDowell moved to Abbott, Proctor and Paine to accept a position as the Director of Regional Research. He was a furniture analyst and was featured in prominent publications including "The Institutional Investor" magazine. When Abbott, Proctor and Paine was absorbed by PaineWebber and the research department was moved to New York, Mr. McDowell chose to remain in Richmond, working as an analyst for Wheat First Securities. In 1975, Mr. McDowell returned to PaineWebber, now UBS Financial Services, where he worked for over 32 years as a financial advisor. Mr. McDowell enjoyed his work immensely and, with the help of his young associate, remained an employee of UBS until his death. He and his wife deeply appreciated the many cards, phone calls and visits from friends, clients, and coworkers during his long illness. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the Massey Cancer Center for their wonderful care. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Avenue. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, May 8, at Second Presbyterian Church. Interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Second Presbyterian Church, 5 North Fifth Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219 or to the charity of your choice.
