John Payne Obituary

John Edward Payne

October 8, 1947 - February 19, 2026

John Edward Payne,78, of Powhatan, Virginia, peacefully passed away on February 19, 2026 at home, surrounded by loved ones. Born and raised in his beloved Nelson County, Virginia, John recently moved from his longtime residence in Midlothian to Powhatan, carrying with him a lifetime of curiosity and kindness.

John was an enthusiastic sports fan who loved discussing various players and stats with his friends. A proud graduate of Virginia Tech, he rarely missed a Hokies game and faithfully cheered for the Washington "Redskins."

John's love of history and collecting shaped much of his life. He had a special talent for discovering "treasures" at estate sales and auctions, forever noting their value but never wanting to part with any of them. He was always eager to uncover the personal stories behind each piece. His deep interest in the Civil War and especially World War II in later years led him to share collected veterans' memorabilia, ephemera, and personal histories through special exhibits at museums, schools, organizations, and community events-work that touched many and preserved important memories for future generations.

John spent his career with Western Electric, which later became Lucent and then Viasystems, beginning in accounting and ultimately serving in customer service until the plant's closure. He then spent a short stint at Hauni Richmond, Inc. before retirement.

After retiring, he devoted time to the Midlothian Friends of the Library, reflecting his lifelong appreciation for books and learning. He was also an active member of the Powhatan Civil War Roundtable, the local World War II Roundtable, and the Battle of the Bulge Organization. These later relationships were truly valued.

John is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Sydney Bradner Payne; his beloved sons, Brad and Nathan Payne; and granddaughter, Arcadia Payne, all of whom brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Anna Payne of Lynchburg and Elizabeth Slaughter of Concord.

Soft-spoken, thoughtful, and genuinely interested in others, John was a friend to many and a steady, kind presence in every community he joined. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and carry forward his spirit of generosity, independence, and love of history that defined his life.

A private family internment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Crater Community Hospice, or a charity of your choice in John's memory.

Forever young at heart, I will always remember the time when we jumped around and behaved like kids in the blow up bouncy house at the Friends of the Library picnic. People said we were too old, but we proved them wrong lol. (I need to find that video.)
I miss you dearly, John.
Such a warm kind soul.

I was saddened to hear of my friend´s passing. We often ran into one another at grocery store parking lots and those chance meetings were always full of great conversations and were never short. John came to our annual antique sales at our home and he gradually acquired many items belonging to an uncle of mine that he displayed at local events pertaining to the Second World War. My moments shared with him were enjoyable and very pleasant. He will be missed by all who knew him. Art Ritter

I met John at the Bon Air Days celebration, where he was standing by his WWII display. My dad,Ellis Cunningham, who was a WWII veteran, was with me and they became fast friends. John was one of the kindest men I have ever met.He took genuine interest in my dad´s war stories and his wellbeing. He lent him a very comfortable chair and stool while he was in an assisted living facility. He took him to the War Memorial, where he volunteered. He also transported and involved him with a WWII round table group. He was like a brother of choice and I cherish all the thoughtful things that he and Sydney did for us.May his Creator of love bless all who mourn and loved him.May we all follow his example of kindness and goodness.
