Joseph Bones Obituary

BONES, Dr. Joseph Thomas, 87, of Bon Air, Va., passed away on January 18, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph White Bones and Evelyn Urquhart Bones of Pulaski, Va. He is survived by his wife, Betty Harris Bones; and his children, Courtney Shultz (Anthony), Leslie Maclay (Jeffrey), Bruce Bones (Susan) and Blair Bones. He also leaves behind his six grandchildren, Meredith Sloop (Jacob), Laura Shultz, Peyton Maclay, Spencer Maclay, Caroline Bones and Harrison Bones. Raised in Pulaski, Va., he attended Pulaski High School and graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1954, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He completed medical school at the Medical College of Virginia in 1958, followed by a two-year residency in pediatrics at MCV. He practiced pediatrics in Richmond with Dr. Lawrence Kendig and Dr. Gayle Arnold until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1967. He served two years at Reynolds Army Hospital at Fort Sill, Okla., having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Upon his discharge, he joined the practice of Dr. Henry Dwyer and Dr. Antony Austin in Richmond. The practice opened a branch in Midlothian, Va., which eventually became known as Chesterfield Pediatrics. Dr. Bones subsequently partnered with Dr. Arlene Harrington, who owns the practice to this day. For many years, Dr. Bones was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, where he served on the vestry. He and Betty hosted The Huguenot House Christian Fellowship at their home in the seventies. He and Betty enjoyed their retirement at their home at Lake Gaston with their golden retrievers. Dr. Bones enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, watching the Washington Football Team (formerly The Redskins), the lake, his dogs and entertaining his pediatric patients with a wide range of cartoon characters he drew on tongue depressors. No services are planned at this time. The family will host a Celebration of Life at a more appropriate time.

I was not there at his funeral, but Dr. Bones was my pediatrician when I was a child (I´m 26 now) My favorite memory of Dr. Bones was when he would draw animals on popsicle sticks at every appointment for me to take home!! So sorry to hear about his passing. Rest In Peace, Dr. Bones

Dr. Bones was all of my children´s pediatrician. Dr. Harrington came on when I had my third. He was the BEST pediatrician ever. He explained all shots that were given and if there was a new one out he would talk to us about the pros and cons. He always had the nurses give the shots so the kids wouldn´t be afraid of him. He always had time to talk to you about any questions you may have. My mother met him once and said he was the best pediatrician she had ever met, and she had met a lot in her life time as she took care of foster kids. It just saddens me that Dr. Bones has passed, a true people person doctor. God be with his family.

Dr. Bones was my dr. In the 90s and 2000s. I remember him drawing pictures for me and my siblings, the dinosaur curitans in the rooms and his ability to make you feel listened too. I think of him fondly and I know he touched many people's lives. Dr. Bones was a wonderful doctor. He will be greatly missed.

So very sorry to hear of Dr. Bones passing.
He was my favorite doctor at Bones, Dwyer and Austin.
I remember well the pictures he would draw on my tongue depressors. Such a good doctor with a kind disposition and caring attitude.

I worked for Dr. Bones right out of high school in 1965. I weighed the children and prepared them for the check ups. Working for him was my first and best job. I was terrified of getting shots, but when I got sick, he gave me a shot that I hardly felt and I was no longer afraid. God bless his family.

My sympathies to the family. I have fond memories of Dr. Bones as my pediatrician in the 70's. He made doctor visits not so scary. Rest in peace, Dr. Bones.
