Joyce Johnson

1950 - 2025

Joyce Edwards Johnson of Richmond, Virginia passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2025. Joyce is survived by her husband of 53 years, Richard Scott Johnson, her children Kelly Suzanne Johnson (Sean Patrick Mahan) and Lindsey Scott Johnson, as well as her grandchildren Callum Scott Lowe and Caden Michael Lowe. Additionally, she is survived by her mother Thelma Davis Edwards of Sandston, Virginia, her sister Judy Fuller (Doug Fuller) of Chesapeake, Virginia, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews and many, many dear friends. She was pre-deceased by her father, Douglas Fairbanks Edwards.

Joyce was born in Richmond and attended Richmond Public Schools where she met her life-long best friend and husband in their Junior Year at John Marshall High School. Joyce and Rich were married in 1972. Above all, Joyce loved her family and friends and adored spending time with them. Whether skiing at Wintergreen or in Colorado, cruising on the James River or the Chesapeake Bay, or relaxing on the white sand and crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean, Joyce was always wearing her beautiful smile.

Joyce was dedicated to her children, welcoming to her friends, and committed to her community. She was always the first to volunteer to be a room mother at her children's schools, drive the carpool, or help a friend through a difficult time. She was devoted to her grandchildren. Mimi always had a warm embrace as well as a pantry full of treats. Callum and Caden loved spending time with her, and it was the highlight of any day when the grandkids were with her.

She believed in education and throughout her life eagerly supported many endeavors including the Girl Scouts, youth dance programs, the Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit and the nursing program at VCUHealth, and various programs at the University of Richmond. While supporting others in their education, she was committed to lifelong learning herself. Joyce enjoyed art-making, interior design, and fashion. In recent years she learned to swim, took ballroom dancing, and loved strength training. Joyce was a beloved friend to all who knew her and a mentor to many - especially to her family. Her ability to focus on the important matters and help others to do likewise was a rare skill. This loving soul will be missed, but never forgotten, as the lives she touched will carry on her gentle spirit.

A celebration of her life will be held in the Cannon Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond on December 18 at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow in the Tyler Haynes Commons.
