Lewis Brothers Obituary

Lewis W. Brothers, Jr.

July 11, 1940 - March 21, 2025

BROTHERS Jr., Lewis W., 84 of Mechanicsville, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 21, 2025. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Nell Brothers. He is survived by his daughter, Jo Nell Robertson (CT); and many dear friends. Lewis proudly served his country in the US Coast Guard. He was a proud waterman, avid fisherman, and duck hunter. He was happiest when spending time on the water. He enjoyed many years on Curls Neck Farm. Lewis loved dogs, especially his labs. He retired from the State Corporation Commission and was VP of Finance at the United Bank of Switzerland. The family will remember him with a Celebration of Life from 4 to 7 p.m., on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville, VA 23111, with his military honors to be rendered at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be provided during the celebration. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his honor can be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

JoNell and CT. My thoughts are with you now (4/25/25, 4-7 pm). I´ve been flooded with memories on Charles´s behalf as well as my own. Curles Neck stories are dominate. I have found them to be quite comforting, especially as I observe Charles´s loss one year ago on April 16. May your memories comfort and sustain you as well.

Lewis was a dear friend and colleague. He was instrumental in bringing me to Virginia and was always very supportive of me throughout all my working years. I served on the NASAA Board with him. I was very fortunate to call him friend.

I met Lewis in 1972, when I began at the SCC, as a 21-year-old right out of college. Lewis was Director of the Securities and Retail Franchising Division and I was handling the SCC's legislative activities. Lewis's family and friends know him from those perspectives, but I want to be sure you know that he was a dedicated, talented and effective public servant. The soundness of Virginia's economy and business practices, even after Lewis retired, are greatly attributable to him. He constantly looked out for the public interest, even when "the business community" was motivated by greed. For many years in the future, Virginians who will never know his name will benefit from the service Lewis Brothers rendered to our Commonwealth.

JoNell and CT. Brad and i were just talking about lunch with Lewis in Mechanicsville at his favorite spot. he said that he didn't like bad weather so we planned on this Spring. i know that your mom is with him, holding his hand and he is giving that incredible laugh to the angels..JoNell, don't need to tell you this but your Dad loved you with all of his heart.. You were always his sunshine. We were so sad to read this today..Sending our love, Theresa and Brad Anderson
