Lucy Clyde Blanton

Lucy Clyde Blanton, 86, entered Heaven on Wednesday, January 4, 2006. She is survived by her sister and her brother-in-law, Rebecca and Edward Parrish Jr. of Columbia, Va.; sister-in-law, Martha Blanton of Pocahontas; cousins, Harvey Adams of Raleigh, N.C.; G. C. Adams of Cartersville; Joyce Beasley of Apex, N.C.; Rebecca Trice of Richmond; Vernon Walton of Richmond and Coffman Walton of Cartersville; nephew, Edward Parrish III of Lynchburg; nieces, Sara Reed of Hamilton, Nancy Parrish of Columbia and Sally Southall of Richmond; several great-nieces, nephews, and countless friends. After graduating from Hamilton High School near Cartersville, she attended Smithdeal Massey Business College. She received nursing and theological degrees from St. Elizabeth's, the University of Virginia, Columbia University, Scarritt College and Garrett Theological Seminary. Guided by her faith, she ministered at McGuire Veterans Hospital, Stuart Circle Hospital, Virginia Baptist Hospital, Zuni Indian Hospital (New Mexico), Charlotte Memorial Hospital, and Mary Johnston School of Nursing (Philippines), where she was a missionary for eight years. She worked at the Virginia Board of Nurse Examiners, where she helped train and license registered nurses until her retirement. Missionary circles in Norfolk, Richmond and other places are named in her honor. She traveled the world extensively and was known for her detailed correspondence and historical writings. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 7 at 3 p.m. at The Hermitage and on Saturday, January 14 at 3 p.m. at Thomas Chapel United Methodist Church, Cartersville, Va. Interment will be at Thomas Chapel Cemetery.
