Lydia Driggers Obituary

Lydia Diane Driggers

Lydia Diane Driggers, born August 25, 1948, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Thursday, January 15th, 2026. She was preceded in death by her late husband and love of her life, Al Driggers; beloved father, William Dowdy, and mother, Thelma Dowdy. She is survived by her two devoted daughters, Shannon Wilson and Rachel McGuinn; son-in-law, Michael Wilson; and grandchildren, Claire (Ian), Clay, Hailey, and Erin who gave her the proud title of 'Grams.' She was further survived by her brother, Ed Dowdy; sister-in-law, Evelyn Dowdy; nephew, Will Dowdy; and sister, Melissa Dowdy.

Lydia was a proud and devoted mother, grandmother, daughter, neighbor, and friend. To know Lydia was to love her. If you were lucky enough to have her in your life or receive one of her handmade kindness bracelets or angels, you knew her endless warmth, love, and genuine desire to make everyone around her feel seen, supported, and loved. Lydia was exceptional at making new friends, always sparking conversation and finding ways to connect with those around her. Her family and close friends found comfort in her gentle habit of calling them 'sugar,' a word that carried her warmth and affection. Alongside the love of her life, Al, she loved the life they built at Smith Mountain Lake; their days were spent fishing, taking peaceful boat rides, and enjoying the lovely Lake community. Music was something both she and Al deeply loved and almost never missed seeing their favorite band The English Channel play around Richmond.

Lydia devoted her entire life to delivering exceptional service to those in need. From 33 years at Bell Atlantic, and C&P Telephone, to nearly 20 years of providing comfort and personalized care at Bliley's Funeral Home, to her lifelong volunteer work through Meals on Wheels, Goochland Cares, to her most recent volunteer work at Circle Center, she exemplified faithfulness, hard work, dedication, patience, devotion, and living in the service of others. She lived by the motto, "if you're not early, you're late." Her work ethic and dedication to her life's purpose of service never went unnoticed. In every role she held, Lydia served with humility, grace, and intentionality. Helping others was never just something she did, it was who she was and the way she chose to love the world around her.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, January 18, 2026 at Bliley's Central Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you please consider donating to the Lewy Body Dementia Foundation, Circle Center, or American Heart Association and taking just five minutes of each day to check-in on and extend kindness to a family member, friend, neighbor, co-worker, or anyone around you.

I did not know Lydia well, only through her amazing support and kindness at Bliley's. She helped me with arrangements when my Dad passed away and helped to make a very sad occasion much better. I still have the angel that she gave me. Her warmth and caring will always be remembered. She truly touched my heart. Heaven now has another wonderful angel.

I worked with Lydia at the phone company for many years . Also enjoyed running into her and Al at different music events. At one point she and Al lived across the street from my brother. What I loved most about Lydia was her sense of humor. She was always so upbeat! I remember when my Mom passed away she learned the difference between a jonquil and a daffodil. My Mom´s favorite flower (as is mine also) is jonquils. Lydia made sure that jonquils were pictured in her pictorial. RIP sweet lady.

Lydia was of immeasurable comfort and assistance at the Staples Mill chapel when my daughter passed several years ago. I will always remember her kindness as we traversed that difficult occasion. May she find peace and her family, love and support. Lydia was a special person.

Lydia was my favorite supervisor at Bell Atlantic because of her caring for others. Especially the way she allowed me to excel and provide support. She was also a family friend of the Donati family.
