Mark Sauer Obituary

SAUER, Mark Armstrong Sr., formerly of Richmond, Va., died on April 12, 2024, in Delray Beach, Fla., following a long illness. Mark was a devoted family man who prized his home and the happiness of his wife and son. A beautiful man, and ever the Southern gentleman, he loved NASCAR, hunting, fishing, golf, hot weather, and good conversation.

Mark was born on January 19, 1952, in Richmond, Va., to Conrad F. Sauer, III, and Barbara (Boyd) Sauer. Mark attended St Christopher's School and Douglas Freeman High School. After graduating from Elon College, Mark joined The C.F. Sauer Company in Richmond, where he worked for over 40 years. He rose to Executive Vice President, overseeing sales and marketing, serving as the company's public face, its historian, and its corporate memory. Mark loved his time at the company and the many employees he considered as family.

After his retirement in 2019, he and Vicki moved to Florida, where Mark attracted a wide circle of new friends with his ready smile, razor-sharp wit, and effortless charm. Even through the pain and uncertainty of his illness, he remained a keen and amused observer of human nature, never losing his ability to lighten our spirits with a joke or quip.

Mark was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Matthew P. Sauer. He is survived by his beloved wife and son, Vicki and Max (Muriel); his brothers Conrad F. Sauer IV (Patricia), Bradford B. Sauer (Janet), and R. Tyler Sauer (Christina); and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, consider a gift in Mark's memory to your favorite charity or Mark's favorite charity, Tunnel to Towers. A memorial service is being planned to be held in Hollywood Cemetery in the early fall.

Vicki, Max and Sauer family,
John and I were privileged to work with Mark during our tenure at Save-A-Lot. We considered Mark more as our friend, not just a vendor. He welcomed us in your home and blessed us by attending our wedding in Missouri in 2003. We are so sorry for your loss and the loss of a true gentleman, a warm soul, and man who dearly loved his family. Cindy and John Tayloe

I met Mark many years ago and taught him how to play golf he was a very good friend of mine and I gave him many a golf lesson and he became pretty good at it. he was a great guy and I really enjoyed being around him. He will be very much missed, I have not seen him in years as I am now 78 years old and I knew him well when he lived in Charlotte I was in my 40s at the time I was shocked to hear of his passing!

Vicki,Max,Conrad and Brad, I was sorry to hear about Mark. I worked for The Sauer Co for 32 years. I worked for Mark as area manager in the Charlotte market. Mark was a great man and always treated me well. He could tell a lot of funny stories. Some of them were even true. Once at a food dealers convention in Charlotte Mark got tired of sitting around. He and I left and went to the golf course. We played golf in the pouring down rain. We had to walk and carry our bags because no carts were allowed. Thats the kind of man Mark was. Thats why I liked him. He would rather play golf in the rain and walk than sit around a boring convention. Mark always supported me in decisions I made while working for him. Our prayers are with your family. Steve and Sheila Webster

Mark was one of best bosses I ever had. Not only did I learn a lot from him but I laughed a lot being around him. He was truly a remarkable and memorable person. I still tell people how lucky I was to work for the CF Sauer Company and to work in Marks department. I have so many wonderful memories of Mark.
