Page Wilson Obituary

WILSON, Page, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at his home in Mechanicsville, Va. Page was an accomplished musician, singer and songwriter, and the host of his locally produced "Out o' the Blue Radio Revue" which could be heard every Saturday night on WCVE radio. The son of the late Vannie and Laura Lee Wilson, he is survived by one daughter, Virginia Blue Wilson; a sister, Laurann Whetham and her husband, Don; two brothers, Paul Wilson and his wife, Patty, and Stephen Wilson and his fianc‚e, Deina Lowery; nine nieces and nephews. He also leaves many close friends, fellow musicians, and fans. As a young man, Page hitchhiked to Texas and Idaho, spent time in Nashville and Key West, but decided Richmond, especially the Chickahominy Swamp, was the place he loved best. Besides the radio show, Page staged several performances with the Richmond Symphony, featuring local bands and singers. One of his greatest pleasures was helping at local charity events, often donating his time as emcee, and occasionally donating his hair. Before health problems forced him to quit playing the guitar, Page and his band, "Reckless Abandon," could be heard most weekends, playing "Virginia" or "Swim Nekkid" or any of the other songs he wrote. His family will miss his warm smile, the twinkle in his eye, and the many dog stories he had to tell. Donations may be made to the Virginia Blue College Fund, and mailed to 8167 Vaughan Dr., Mechanicsville, Va. 23111. A memorial will be held at a later date.

Was just thinking about him and how I liked his show. I made it a point to listen to him when he was on.
Doesn't seem like he's been gone this long.

I just came across Page's obituary when my hustsnd I were reminiscing about the show. I struggled s bit to recall Page's last name, but searched online and his name, the name of the show, his band and so much more came back in our memories. On another page, I found where some of his recorded shows are preserved. I'll have to go back to listen to more. I especially loved hearing the theme song, "Virginia" again . I wish i had known of Page sooner as i enjoyed the show after my husband introduced it to me. He said he spent a lot of time at Peaches Records buying albums he first heard on The Out Of The Blue Radio Review.

It's been years, but I know his daughter and other family members and friends still miss him. My condolences - albeit late.

I was a founding member of the original "Reckless Abandon" in Key West FL. Page replaced one of our members temporarily. I have picked with Page at half the joints in South Florida. Although I lost touch over the years, I remember Page very fondly. I have some stories to tell, if any of his family would like to hear them. Most are kind of funny. Page was one of a kind. We were both at Union Grove NC in '77. We were actually roommates briefly in Key West. I was very saddened to hear of his passing and would like to correspond with his family, maybe some of the new "Reckless Abandon." May the Lord be with the Wilson family. I suppose these wishes are better late than never.

Mr. Page sang "Amazing Grace" at my uncle's funeral in 1998. It was beautiful. I've seen his band live many times. Rest in peace my good man.

My deepest sympathy to Page Wilson's family and bandmates. He was an old friend of my brother, Harold (Bubba) Friedhoff, who was deeply saddened to hear of Page' sudden death. We enjoy Page's music and my 5 year old granddaughter loves to sing "Swim Nekkid". I know he will be greatly missed. May God bless you all.

I heard you had a bad fall, but I just found out. My heart and prayers go out to Virginia Blue and your family. I've known you since way back when we both worked at Richmond Piano. One of the most rememberable nights I've ever had is when my wife & I saw you playing at 3/4 Time in Ocracoke. We stayed up almost all night talking after your last set. May the Lord bless you and your family.

I remember when Page was getting it going. He was up on stage with Tom T. Hall in the Shenandoah. He was a classic. Nobody sang Mr. Peabody's coal train like him. He always had a kind word, a grin that wouldn't quit and a heart as big as God would allow. The world is quieter, but Heaven must be full of some extra joy. We will miss you, until we meet again.

Hey...Page, The picture is of you and Virginia Blue holding Belle and Jake back when you first got them(about 2 months old). You gave me this picture so I could have a baby picture of Belle who was 6 months old when she came to live with me back in Jan. 2006. It was only a couple months ago we were talking, about all the dogs ( I think you said 16) you've had over your 50 some years... Your plan was to write a book with stories about them and some of the "characters" you met as you traveled around. Sadly that book of stories was never completed... but, I am thinking how happy you are now to be reunited with all your previous Purebred American Mongrels ~ yep... I believe All Dogs do go to Heaven. The last two dogs on your list were Belle and of course...Jake... They are both with me now. Jake's doing find and such a good boy! ... I know he misses you ... but is happy to be reunited with his sister... Rest easy my friend... Jake will be spoiled 'til you see him wandering through the Pearly Gates to find you callin'... Heeere Jake... com'on Boy ..com'on! ...now Git on up there in the truck... goood boy, Jake!

We miss you... can't help but think God called you for a Main Event he has planned and wants you to be the Emcee and... maybe even heard a few "cats" too.... love ya," Darlinn'"

Our condolences to Virginia Blue and Page's family and friends. Oh how we will miss Page's warm, rich voice ... the twinkle in his eye ... and the masterful way he could replace a broken guitar string while engaging (therefore distracting) the audience with a lively story (all in record time). We have been listening to Bridge of Love all weekend ... each song dear to our hearts. God bless you!

I moved to the Richmond area about 3 1/2 years ago. Discovered the "Out of the Blue" radio revue, which got me through many a Saturday night in a new town. I could relate to the song, though "home" is different for each of us. Saw Page at many volunteer events, sharing his time and promoting the music. He seemed quite a gem of a person. Only a deep and thoughtful soul could write such a beautiful song. Rest in peace, Page, and thank you so much for your music.

Twenty five years ago Page Wilson came by WXGI AM 950, this was when I was the host of the Saturday Morning Bluegrass show. Page was a fan of the station and of my show.
We talked about music and promoted his “Road Tired, Wired and Ready” LP. “The album was actually doing quit well in Canada... of all places” he said with a laugh and a big smile.
I cued up and played a few selections and interviewed Page in between. Giving local talent a venue to be heard was a staple of the show and the station back then. Page and I had a number of things in common.
The love of the music stood out the most. A few years later Page started his own radio program “Out of the Blue Radio Review” over at WTVR FM.
This was when their format was country music before the format changed over to what it is now, Lite 98. "Out of the Blue" was even going into syndication on the Eastern Shore and in West Virginia. Page was a fan of my radio program, and I was a fan of his. I greatly admired his creativeness, and that carried over and gave me a syndication idea as well "Bluegrass Across America". We met again at the satellite company, Page was very supportive of my efforts. Due to $$$$ [lack there of] that goal I could never reach. Page carried on and grew with his. Thank you Page for being thoughtful, caring and an inspiration.
Richmond has lost one of most devoted Virginia talent driven voices.
May his family be comforted knowing that their Page was well loved and will be greatly missed.
May GOD Bless, and comfort his family during their time of grief and sorrow!

The Good, the Bad, the ugly! The GOOD was & is knowing Page-and there was sooo much good inside this man! The Bad we had to lose him so early. Virginia Blue my heart hurts for you and the entire family. The ugly is Pages' time on earth has ended----but the BEST is he is in his heavenly home with GODS' love and without pain! tHANK-YOU Page for the many kind things you did !

We took for granted he would be on the radio every Saturday night. I would record and listen to his shows later as I drove back and forth to work in NJ and DC.It was better than anything I could find on the radio anywhere, anytime. The last of many of his shows I attended was at Grandpa Eddie's, although he was in pain sitting in a chair playin'and singin' , he and Reckless Abandon sounded great.
Man we are missing him !
Longtime listener and fan, Mark.

We all lost one of the best friends that one could ever have at way too young an early age. Page was the best, pretty much at everything he did. I never met you, Virginia Blue, but you have to be proud of this wonderful human being who brought so much joy and love through his music to so many. I was one of Page's friends from high school; but also knew him after; got his first CD at Studley Store; and having been playing it like non-stop this whole week. Crying, wondering why, realizing no one knows the answer to that question. One day I talked to him about going off and goofing around; but he said he had to go home and plant his garden!!! Such a devoted Hanover County, Mechanicsville, Richmond guy with so many talents!!! We all loved and will continue to love Page, as a sweet person, talented musician; but most of all, for me, a caring individual who always made me laugh. I don't claim to know everything--but one thing I do know; and that is that Page is "rambling" up there in Heaven, and at peace in Virginia as he so stated in his song, "Virginia". Love you forever, Page, you will never be forgotten. Judy

Even though I didn't know Page personally, his warmth and humor during the Out of the Blue Radio Review made him seem like a friend. His annual review at Pocahontas State Park with Reckless Abandon and guests, along with shows featuring the Richmond Symphony were always hightlights in local music for me.
Condolences to Page's family, friends and fans. Saturday evenings just won't be the same anymore, but Page's music and impact on the community will live on.

Page,

I’ve been trying to “get over what’s gone down and ready for what’s comin’ ‘round” but I can’t seem to get past the what’s gone down part this week. I miss you so very much already and Saturday evenings and life around this town will never be the same without you. You brought so much kindness and pleasure to my life and to your other many fans & friends. And, we all will sorely miss you. My very best wishes go out to your family, especially to your daughter, Virginia Blue, the love of your life.

Miss Virginia,

Your daddy was a generous and kind man who marched to his own beat from beginning to end, and that’s what I call integrity. That’s such a rare and precious thing and few of us can stand up to that test. May God bless you and your family, and give you comfort during this sad time of loss. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Page,

Thank you for your kindness, friendship, and generosity throughout the years. Rest well dear fellow, I’ll see you on the other side of the swamp one day! Here’s a video I made for you to travel by. It reminds me of the spirit in which you approached and lived you life:

My condolences to Page's daughter, Virginia Blue, Page's siblings, nieces and nephews and Page's friends, fellow musicians and fans. May time befriend you to ease your pain and sorrow, may Page's music and charitable legacy be a balm to you and may his example in human living help us all to live the remainder of our days in compassionate harmony with one another.

I am one who moved away from our beloved Virginia and hadn't seen Page in many years. However, time and distance have not erased my memories nor diminished my gratitude for those memories - of good times in my youth in which Page participated and for which, in some instances, was directly responsible.

I toast the good times from yesteryear, I try to shed no tears at last passing, to know the best has come for Page and I offer thanksgiving that his soul is at peace and rests always in Virginia.

I am so very sorry for our collective loss, especially yours, Virginia Blue. You will never leave him behind, but carry him with you always in your heart, your soul, your mind and many of your words and mannerisms. My deepest sympathy.

Will ".... miss his warm smile, the twinkle in his eye, and the many (dog) stories he had to tell...." ~ RTD/Obit 3-20-11 ... miss that wonderful voice that sung songs ranging from loud and boisterous to hauntingly tender and beautiful...and his infectious laugh that could be heard above the crowd... letting you know...Page had arrived! ...but most of all, I will miss my friend. My deepest sympathy to Virginia Blue and to the family. We know Page is singing with the Angels now.
