Rebecca Burgess Obituary

On April 3, 2006, Rebecca Bucher Burgess, of Chapel Hill, N.C., left us here on earth to continue her journey with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She joined her son, Aaron, who met our Lord in August, 1999. Her journey began on April 24, 1948 in Richmond, Va. as the first child of Charlotte Selden and David Bucher. Charlotte and Dave had two additional daughters, Courtney B. Bankson of Falbrook, Calif. and Deborah B. Coleman of Midlothian, Va. While attending Elon College in North Carolina in 1966, she met and married Chester W. Burgess III. They were married at Christ The King Lutheran Church in Richmond, Va., where Becky and her family were charter members. While living in Richmond, Becky and Chet became parents of Aaron W. and Joshua W. by choice of adoption. Courtney gave Becky three nieces: Brandyn resides in San Diego, Calif. and Ashley and Ryan reside in Chapel Hill, N.C. Becky married into a family of five Burgess men, and she eventually became aunt to seven nieces and nephews (a role she dearly loved). Becky volunteered as a social worker for the City of Richmond in 1979. Becky and Chet were both members of the National Alumni Executive Board of Elon University. She fully supported Chet in his role as an active member of the National Association of Homebuilders and Homebuilders Association of Durham, Orange and Chatham Counties. Becky also supported the Beatrice Ruth Burgess Center For West Virginia Families and Communities, Division of Social Work For West Virginia University. 20 years ago, Becky was diagnosed with a hereditary form of Muscular Dystrophy. She was later diagnosed, in July 2005, with a brain tumor. Services for Becky include a visitation at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2006 at the Evergreen United Methodist Church and a memorial service there on Saturday, April 8, 2006, at 4 p.m. As Becky continues her journey with Aaron and other immediate family members, please remember them by supporting Evergreen United Methodist Church Food Pantry, a community project to feed the hungry, or the Evergreen United Methodist Church Relay-For-Life Team, 15/501 S., Chapel Hill, N.C. Arrangements by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh, N.C.

The Burgess Family,

I had the wonderful experience of knowing Aaron, during his stay at The Oakland School in Keswick, VA. I got to know the Burgesses very well and also keep up with them after their move to Chapel Hill. I was in contact with Rebecca during Aaron's illness and homegoing , to be with Our Lord and Savior in heaven. We have the everlasting knowledge from above that we will see our love ones again. I will continue to hold you all up in my thoughts and prayers during this time of loss. With Our Savior's Love, Nurse Joyce
