Russell Glenn Obituary

GLENN, Russell Barry, of Rockville, VA passed on November 10th, 2023 after a lengthy battle with brain cancer.

Born in Richmond, VA on September 21, 1950, Barry was a graduate of Douglas Freeman High School, Old Dominion University (BA), and University of Kentucky (M.S. Ed). As a lifelong educator, he served as an English teacher, Coach, Headmaster, and Director of Development. During the last 25 years, Barry found his true calling, working with at-risk students as CEO of Jobs for Virginia Graduates (JVG). He forged lasting friendships with students and colleagues.

Barry was a loving and devoted husband and father. Whether you called him Barry, RB, BG, Coach, Dad, or BB, you knew his family and friends always came first. If Barry called you "Knucklehead", you knew you were loved and admired. He was known for his sense of humor, boisterous personality, and countless sayings and adages. Barry would often quip "you've never had a better friend than me!" He loved teaching and coaching no matter the subject or sport. He was well read, and often could argue or defend any topic no matter the side (sometimes just to needle his loved ones). He was never idle, he loved golf, and creating projects to occupy his time, he was always up to something.

Barry was preceded in death by his parents, Lt. Col. Thomas Pollard Glenn and Christine Parrish Glenn Mayer; a brother, Dennis Cleveland Glenn, and stepfather, Albert John "Jack" Mayer, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Temple Adair Glenn, and children, Charlie (Kathleen), Adair, Thomas (fiancée Lianne), and grandsons, Grayson and Davis. He is also survived by a brother, Thomas Arthur Glenn, and nephews.

The family is indebted to the following support teams: Grace Baptist Church, Hanover Fire-EMS Station 9, Rockville, Jobs for VA Graduates (JVG), Hospice of Virginia, Physical Therapy Solutions, Glen Allen, Sarah Cannon Institute at Johnston Willis Hospital, TISCH Brain Tumor Center at Duke.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 18th at 1 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 4200 Dover Rd, Richmond, VA.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to any of the support teams.

Temple and family,

You have been heavy on my heart since I learned of Barry´s passing. I have the utmost respect for him and the work that he so tirelessly put into the JVG Programs across the state with you as his worthy partner. My former students who had the privilege of meeting with him and joking with him in my classroom loved him, and often they woukd ask when Barry would be back to call them knuckleheads. His impact on the entire JVG program is immeasurable; I know that I am a better person because of his enthusiasm and his dedication to the underdog.

With prayer, gratitude, and respect,
Kristin Breslin

I am saddened for Temple, their children, grandchildren and all of the JVG family (past and present), but relieved that Barry's no longer suffering and is now in the arms of our Lord and Savior.
I am thankful to have had the opportunity to work with Barry and Temple over the years with JVG and considered them my friends for life.
Barry had a big heart and was so compassionate about the JVG programs where he made a major impact on everyone he met throughout the state of Virginia and all over the United States through JAG.
I will cherish the memories of this man who was a comical "knucklehead" at times, full of life, compassionate and caring.
Keeping all of the family in my thoughts and prayers and may God give them peace and comfort in the days ahead.

Barry was a remarkable person, a mentor and leader who inspired and guided us with wisdom, kindness, dedication, and that beautiful warm smile. He left an indelible mark on all who worked with him and a lasting impact on the young lives touched by his spirit. I have been blessed to share in his journey.

I only knew him for a short time, however it was enough to call him a friend (despite his disparaging comments about my golf swing)!
I´ll mis him!
