Shirley I. Lewis, surrounded by her loving family passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at the age of 82.
Shirley was the adored wife of John (Bill) Lewis; and devoted mother of six children Frank (Cathy), Clint, Chris, JoAnn (Mike), Beatrice (Mike), and Danny Ray (Madison). She is survived by her sisters Anne Branch and Audrey Smith; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Shirley was born in Nelson County. She worked at a local apple orchard prior to moving to Goochland, where she found employment at Dameron's Store. Shirley also worked for years as a substitute mail carrier for the US Postal Service before being hired on as a full-time mail carrier. Shirley touched the lives of so many Goochland County residents running her mail route for 35 years before retiring. Shirley was also a faithful member of Gum Spring Methodist Church where she devoted her time to caring for children in the nursery. As fate would have it, one day Shirley noticed that Bill was receiving numerous birthday cards in the mail. She left a note to Bill to wish him a Happy Birthday. Bill called Shirley to thank her for the note which began a 36-year love affair where the two were inseparable.
Memaw was the center of our family. Her heartwarming smile, comforting hugs and generous soul will be deeply missed, but we find solace in knowing she is now at peace in the arms of her Savior.
A viewing will be held on 14 December 2024, at Bliley's Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Ave. Richmond, VA, from 4 pm to 7 pm. A private grave side service will be held at a later date. In leu of flowers please consider making donations in Shirley's name to the Goochland County Volunteer Fire Department.
