Stephen Jeter Obituary

JETER, Stephen, Richmond, Va. Stephen Terrell Jeter, whose exuberance for life surpassed the time he was allotted to live it, died suddenly on August 12, 2022. He was surrounded by the people he loved, doing what he loved â€" exercising, listening to music and preparing to meet a new day.

Stephen Jeter lived to love his wife, Melanie; and daughter and son-in-law, Madison and William Coleman; his parents, Col. John R. "Jack" and Dr. Katherine Jeter; his siblings, Sally Jeter Gregg and her husband, Scott and John R. Jeter III and his wife, Kathy; his sister-in-law, Lorena Rankin and her husband, Kurt; nieces and nephews, aunts and cousins; and his dog, Cooper.

Stephen was passionate about family, music, food and fun, meeting new people, experiencing new things. He gave his brother, John, a kidney 38 years ago and he gave his sister a call every Saturday morning.

He will be missed by colleagues, clients, college friends, CrossFit and pickleball partners.

Most recently a resident of Richmond, Va., Stephen graduated in 1985 from Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Stephen worked in management and field positions at Frito-Lay, Pepperidge Farm and, since 2018, R.L. Schreiber in Richmond. He founded The Handlebar, an iconic music club in Greenville, S.C., with his brother in 1994.

Stephen was happiest when following his daughter from one golf championship to another or planning new adventures with his wife.

Stephen Jeter woke up every day of his too-short life and chose joy. The family asks that donations in his honor be made to organizations that help people live their healthiest, happiest lives, including Young Survival Coalition (https://www.youngsurvival.org/give) or Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (https://www.cancer.org)

A Celebration of Life will be held in the coming weeks at the Jeter Chapel and the Jeter Family Cemetery in Union, S.C. Condolences to the family may be shared here www.moodyconnollyfuneralhome.com.

Stephen had keen interest in another sport...squash. Stephen played for the last several years at the Y, and played in the RVA City Squash League against all the other clubs in the area. Stephen was also one of the players that I would run into all around town: Grocery store, pickle ball, his storage unit, etc...I would run to him all over, and he was consistently kind and always had a good word to share. I know I speak for the whole of the the Downtown Y squash community when I say we are saddened and will miss seeing Stephen on the court.

Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. I knew Stephen through the squash community at the Richmond Downtown YMCA. Stephen was one of the friendliest guys in our community, always ready with a friendly word, a quick smile, and a warm handshake. I always looked forward to seeing him. He'll be missed by all of us at the Y. Rest in peace, Stephen.

I knew stephen for a few years because he was my season guy for the lindsey food group. Everytime i saw him, he was always cheerful and supported us like no other. He will be missed and shocked to hear that he is gone from this earth. Will be missed but never forgotten. My condolences to his family

I went to high school with Steve in the late `70s. He always struck me as a very positive and friendly guy. My condolences to his family and friends, I know he will be sorely missed.

Sincere condolences to Stephen´s family. He introduced me to pickleball during the pandemic and I always enjoyed my chats with him after pickleball or squash at the Y. May his soul lie on the right side of God.

Stephen was my spice guy. He was a joy to have pop in from time to time. He´d come to the back prep room of my store on Grove Avenue, shake some spice tubs, decide what I needed and fulfill an order. He was very kind and personable and throughout the year I knew him, would always inquire about my latest wedding plans. When I told him it was a nice big Italian wedding, he ran to his truck, brought back a white envelope with 10 bucks in it, and told me to buy ourselves a round of celebratory drinks. He didn´t have to do that. I´ll miss seeing him and my heart is holding a special place for his family. Love to all.

I worked with Stephen at Pepperidge Farm for years. He was a great to work with and taught me a lot. I have added a photo of one of our, giving back days where we volunteered at the Richmond food bank. It was a great day for our team.
