Stuart Sanders Obituary

Stuart Sanders II, 92, died Sunday, April 6, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Adelina Matilda Hall Sanders; one daughter, Jessica Sanders Jones, both of Richmond; two sons, Stuart Hall Sanders of Boynton Beach, Florida, Irwin Taylor Sanders II of Lexington; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Sanders was the oldest past president of the Kiwanis Club at the time of this death. He was awarded the Legion of Honor Award in 1996 and received the George F. Hixson Fellow Award from Kiwanis International. He served on a number of civic boards, including the Richmond YMCA and the Boy Scouts Council. He was past president of Richmond’s Washington and Lee University Alumni Club. He was a former board member and president of Richmond Home for Ladies, now Covenant Woods. As a young man, Mr. Sanders raised substantial sums for charity and war bonds during WWII as a professional magician, performing under the name Zanderz. He was a deacon and elder of First Presbyterian Church and served on the session of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. In the late 1980s, he retired as president of Sanders Brothers Company, Inc. of Richmond and was a past president of the Roanoke Paint and Glass Company. He was a longtime director of Southern Bank and Trust Company, now Wachovia. In 1945, he was elected Richmond Young Man of the Year. At W&L he was a member of Delta Upsilon Social Fraternity and he was also a member of Omicron Delta Kappa. Mr. Sanders was also a member of the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Virginia and The Country Club of Virginia. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Avenue. The family will receive friends 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, with interment in Hollywood Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Kiwanis Foundation or to Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church.
