Carlton H. Stauffer, 87, formerly of West Pittston, died on Sunday, August 15, 2010, at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, Pa. He was the beloved husband of Doris Hunt Schaus, celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary in April. His first wife, Elaine Ramage Stauffer, died in 1987. Born in Hughestown, he was a son of the late Roy and Hilda Stauffer. He was a graduate of West Pittston High School, Class of 1941, where he served as a class officer. Mr. Stauffer served in the U.S. Army during the Second World War as a combat rifleman with Company G, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. He took part in the assault on Utah Beach, the liberation of Paris and the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest, during which time he was awarded a Bronze Star for his service. He was a member of the 4th Division Association and attended the 40th and 50th D-Day reunions in Normandy, France. His wartime correspondence and memoirs are a part of the Pennsylvania State Archives, Harrisburg, and the New York State Archives, Albany. Following his discharge from active duty, Mr. Stauffer joined his father's automobile dealership in West Pittston. He spent his entire business career in the automobile business with his final years in business in Clarks Summit. Mr. Stauffer was active in civic affairs throughout his life. He served on the West Pittston School Board from 1957 to 1959. He was president of the Pittston Rotary Club and a Past District Governor in Rotary International District 741. He served as President of the West Pittston Library Association. Mr. Stauffer also was a Director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania AAA Motor Club and was President of the Motor Club from 1981 to 1983. He was a Past Master Mason and was awarded the 50-year Masonic Service Emblem by the R.W. Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania in 1997. In addition to his wife, Mr. Stauffer is survived by his children, Karen Dorward (Wilson), Richard Stauffer (Hillary); and three grandchildren, Eric Dorward (Sarah), Megan Dorward and Emily Stauffer Rocha (Gil). He is also survived by his stepchildren. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the John S. Sell Memorial Chapel, Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, Pa. There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 3 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in the West Pittston Cemetery and will be at the convenience of the family.
