David Simon Obituary

February 17, 2010

David P. Simon, 63, of Ellicott City, Md., died Wednesday morning, Feb. 17, 2010, while surrounded by his loving family. Born in Kingston, he was a son to the late Simon Peter Simon and Nora Hassey Simon. Dave graduated from Kingston High School and King's College before acquiring his master's degree at George Washington University. He spent 27 of his 31 years as a highly respected math teacher at Paint Branch High School, where he was also named as Coach of the Year after guiding his 1978 wrestling team to the first Maryland State Championship Title won by a Montgomery County team. Dave began his successful real estate career in 1976, working at Chesley Real Estate, and moved onto ReMax Advantage in 1994. He loved working with people and helping them find a place they could call home. Dave was loved by so many people because of his warmth, outgoing nature, sense of humor, and generous spirit. He epitomized what it means to be a wonderful family man and loyal friend. He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Webb); his children, Jennifer, Michelle, Nicole, David and Steven; his brothers, James and Thomas; and his sister, Mary Charles. Dave will be forever in the hearts of his family and friends. The viewing will be held today at Witzke Funeral Home on Twin Knolls Road in Columbia, Md., from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Louis Catholic Church on Route 108 in Clarksville, Md. If you prefer to make a charitable donation, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to the American Cancer Society.

My memories of David span a lifetime. His sister, Mary, was and is, my best friend. I knocked on their door each morning and we walked to school together. We always felt safe with David there to protect us. I worried along with his family as he dieted on jello and oranges to make his wrestling weight. David, along with his entire family, were like my own. Many nights he or his dad would walk me home from an event or school activity. The last time I saw Dave was in Kingston, at the family home when I came to see his mom before she passed away. We sat around the table with his two wonderful daughters, catching up on the years. He was so gentle and caring and compassionate. But you know that and more. You had the privilage of sharing life with him...a special gift, indeed. Your memories will comfort you now and always. I know they comfort me. You know how much he loved you and that love will be with you always. He can never be replaced but his spirit will continue through you. Please accept my most sincere sympathy. We will all miss his goodness in the world. Your friend, Cathy (Yankovich) Cubelic

Dear Simon family,

I'm saddened to hear of your loss. Dave, MR. Simon, was my math teacher at Paint Branch for a couple of years and even as a teenager it was apparent that he took a sincere interest in the teaching and mentoring of young kids. Having lost my father to cancer I can feel your loss and frustration with this horrible experience.

My sincere condolences,

As a current Computer Science professor, I often tell my students of teachers I've had in the past who have influenced me. Mr Simon was one of those people who I hold deep in my heart. Just know that he has left a legacy that will live forever.

To the Simons,

Although we had lost track of Dave's course through life, as a fellow high school wrestler, summer-time soda jerk and neighbor, we remember fondly an energetic, outgoing young man. A friend to everyone, his enthusiasm for life, respect for parents and love of family and friends spilled over into all that he touched. The measure of a man is how he lived and the difference he made in the lives of those he came into contact with. It sounds as though Dave was very successful in that path. Our condolences to the Simon family in their time of grief.

I will never forget my best friend. I will never forget my second family. My heart is truly aching as I am sure yours is. If I were to list all of the good times and great memories it would take several volumes to complete. All of them filled with love, laughter and friendship. Dave was my brother, maybe not in name but definetly in spirit. I will never forget his laugh or his smile. Both were so pure and honest.

Patti,

My heart grew sad when I heard this morning of Dave's passing. Of course, to me he will eternally be Coach Simon who persuaded me to abandon basketball in favor of wrestling. That year remains one of my fondest memories. He also supported me when I found myself in a bit of trouble my senior year - a gesture that was always appreciated and remembered. May you and the kids be comforted to know that he rests peacefully but his spirit will live through all of our great memories of our beloved teacher and coach.
