Helen Elmes Obituary

Helen M. Elmes, 89, of West Zenith Road, Nescopeck, ended her journey in this life at 2:56 a.m. Sunday, September 23, 2007, at the Berwick Hospital Center.
Helen was born on September 8, 1918, in Locust Township, Columbia County, a daughter of the late William Henry Litwhiler and Sarah Catherine Reigel Litwhiler Ford. She graduated from the former Locust Township High School, Numidia. In her early years, she worked at Milco Ind., Bloomsburg, and for 35 years at Lady Ester Lingerie Corp., Berwick.
She was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church; Zenith member of the LCW and served on its Cradle Roll. She enjoyed crocheting and tatting, having won many blue ribbons at the Bloomsburg Fair. She enjoyed working in her garden and yard before entering the hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Warren F. Elmes, on October 16, 2001; and brother Henry Litwhiler.
She will be remembered by two sons, James D. Elmes, rural Nescopeck; and William R. Elmes, Beach Haven; daughter Dr. Jane Elmes-Crahall, Larksville; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters Alvin Litwhiler, rural Benton; Edward Litwhiler, Jacksonville, Fla.; Irene Corby, August, W.Va.; Eugene Litwhiler, Orefield, Pa.; Evanna Kessler, rural Orangeville; Charles Litwhiler, Benton; and Lillian Miller, Barto, Pa.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. from St. James Lutheran Church, 1488 Zenith Road., Nescopeck, with the Rev. Tony Pagotto, her pastor, presiding. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, or at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the memorial fund of the church.
