Robert Montgomery Obituary

Dr. Robert A. Montgomery Jr.
68, an area veterinarian, family leader, and friend, passed away in Aultman Hospital, Wednesday morning, Aug. 28, 2013, following heart complications. Born June 26, 1945 in Canton, he was the son of the late Robert Allen and Alice Montgomery, Sr. After graduating from Jackson High School in 1963, Bob attended the United States Coast Guard Academy where he played four years of football for the USCGA Bears under the leadership of legendary Otto Graham and was proud to have been a part of the 1963 undefeated team. Following graduation, he served his country in the United States Coast Guard. Bob continued his formal education at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine where he graduated in 1975. He then joined the Town & Country Veterinary practice, and became partner in 1977. His love for the animals was evident every day he walked into the clinic and he was forever on the lookout for ways to improve the care he provided by completing an Acupuncture accreditation in 1992. Bob can best be described as a lover of life. He radiated joy, encouragement, compassion, and love daily. Hobbies included golfing, skiing, fishing, and spinning. Most of all, spending time with his family creating memories to last a lifetime was of utmost importance. He adored his two grandchildren, and loved being their grandpa.
On June 15, 1968, Bob was united in holy marriage to his lifelong companion, lover, and friend, the former Cheryl Forgan. Together, they enjoyed being the proud parents of Amy (Larry) Hootman of New Philadelphia and Keith Montgomery of Steamboat Springs, Colo., as well as loving grandparents to Jacob and Emily Hootman. He is also survived by two brothers, Bruce and Scott Montgomery; his father-in-law, Dale Forgan; his sisters-in-law, Dalene (Jim Vincent) Forgan and Becky (Steve) Studer; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Dahmer; and his mother-in-law, Marilyn Forgan.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013 beginning at 2:30 p.m. A dessert reception hosted by Bob's church family will follow the service. At a later date, inurnment will be held in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at Rittman, Ohio where military honors will be rendered. Memorial contributions in honor and glory of Bob's life may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice. Those wishing to do so may send the family a personal condolence and light a candle in remembrance of Bob by visiting the funeral home website at www.GeibCares.com.

I called the clinic today when my dog woke up ill only to hear the sad news. You see, we moved to Toronto, OH near Steubenville about 7 years ago but I continued to drive her over an hour to see Dr Montgomery because he was the best! I was so sad to hear the news and still can't shake the sadness I've felt since this morning. I offer my sympathies to his family. My boys are about the age of his grandchildren and we shared similar stories when I was in with my dogs. You lost a dear man as I know you know and I hope the happy memories will carry you all forward until you are together again.

To the Montgomery family and Town and Country staff,
I have been a with Bob since he started with the practice. There never was a time I went into the office without him telling a joke! Along with his ornery side was a wonderful man whole truly loved what he did. He always told you what he felt was best....even if it was not what you wanted to hear. As we all mourn his passing, I am certain he will be greeted by all my pets in heaven.

Dr. Montgomery was so kind to us when our sweet little Kiefer (corgi) lost the use of his back legs. He painstakingly tried accupuncture but to no avail. He was always so gentle with her. I will miss him. He was dedicated to his patients and their families. I vowed never to have another corgi again, but of course I relented. When I showed up in the office with little Kodi he got the biggest grin on his face and had kind words to say about the little fella. God Bless you Dr. Montgomery. You were a real humanitarian. You will be missed. May your family find comfort at this time.

Sincerely,
Maria Bucevac

I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Bob's death. The past 18 years, he was always available for me when an emergency would arise with one of my four legged "kids", even when out of state. He truly cared about those in his care.May his family and his staff at Town and Country find comfort in each other and the stories and memories they can share about this great man. Heaven's animals are in wonderful hands!

I'm sure when a person goes into veterinary medicine they realize the impact on our little buddies, but I can't imagine a career choice that has such a huge impact on their people. Bob was one in a million just because he is Bob, and he certainly shared a huge part of my life- happy and sad. Bob had been a part of my and my little furry family for over 20 years. I just can't imagine this world without this kind, compassionate and good natured man. My heart is broken for his family and all who have had the great pleasure of knowing him through the years. God bless Bob and his loving family and dear friends who will all miss him so, so much.
