John Higgins Obituary

Higgins, John Eric Esq. ALBANY John Eric Higgins, 56, of Albany, passed away on September 4, 2017. Having recently sent his youngest daughter to her first year of college at SUNY Geneseo, and helping his oldest to purchase a car and start her junior year of college at Siena College, he was full of pride when he passed. Born in Charleston, S.C., on June 28, 1961, he was the son of the late Patricia Ann Higgins, and Robert Samuel DeCosta Higgins, M.D. He was the maternal grandson of the late Alma Marshall Jennings, and John William Jennings, one of Albany's earliest Black attorneys, and one of the first to integrate the Pine Hills area in Albany. After the premature passing of his father, John moved back to Albany with his two brothers and his mother. John attended the Albany Academy for Boys for 13 years, where he was captain of the Varsity Football team. After graduating in 1979, he attended Hamilton College where he played D3 football for four years, and received B.A. in English in 1983. John then attended Albany Law School, where he became licensed as a labor lawyer in 1989. In 1996, John married Katja Cecchetti Higgins, of Mogliano, Veneto, Italy. They resided in Albany and raised two daughters, Jasmine Higgins (20), and Isabella Higgins (18). John began his professional work as Labor Lawyer soon after passing the N.Y.S. Bar Exam in 1990 with Bond, Schoeneck and King, Cusick, Hacker and Murphy, Nixon Peabody, and finally found his home at Jackson Lewis. John practiced management-side labor law for 25 years, and loved every year of it. He was an expert in discrimination and received several awards for his passionate litigation skills, including Best Lawyer Albany Labor Lawyer of the year (2015), and most recently Best Lawyers in America: Employment Law-Management, Labor Law-Management and Litigation-Labor and Employment (2018). John also participated in the Albany Court Bar Association, the American Bar Association, National Bar Association, Capital District Trial Lawyers Association, New York State Bar Association, management co-chair of the Labor and Employment Section's ADR Committee, New York State Bar Association, former co-chair of the Committee on Minorities in the Profession, and Capital District Black & Hispanic Bar Association, former president (2004-2009). Outside of his complete and utter devotion to practicing law, the things he loved equally, if not more, were singing karaoke at multiple locations in downtown Albany, wearing his crocs, lounge pants, a true fashion icon. John loved to golf, albeit somewhat terribly and enjoyed taking his oldest daughter out on several occasions. He was always the loudest most enthusiastic parent at his daughters' soccer, lacrosse and rugby games. It was impossible to go anywhere with John without seeing a minimum of three people that he knew that had a lively story to tell about him. Survivors include his wife, Katja Cecchetti Higgins; two daughters, Jasmine Higgins and Isabella Higgins; his two brothers, Robert Samuel DeCosta Higgins II, M.D. and his wife, Molly, of Baltimore, Md. and Kevin Alan Higgins and his wife, Jane, of Scarsdale, N.Y.; his seven nieces and nephews, John, Grace, Grant, Olivia, St. Julian, Ruggero, and Raniero; and his family in Italy. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, September 8, from 5-8 p.m. at the Tebbutt Funeral Home, 633 Central Ave., Albany. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 9, at 3 p.m. at the Cathedral of All Saints, 62 S. Swan St., Albany, followed by entombment in Graceland Cemetery, Albany. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's memory, to his family, made payable to Jackson Lewis, P.C., attn. William Anthony, 677 Broadway, 9th Floor, Albany, NY 12207 or online at youcaring.com/thefamilyofjohnehiggins-940103; as well as to the Cathedral of All Saints. I just met Isa this year at Geneseo. She is bright, clever, friendly and I am lucky to have found someone like her. She lights up the room no matter where she goes, and she is intelligent and creative beyond belief. She is one of those people who you've only known for a few weeks, but feel like you've known her your whole life. I am proud of her as I am sure her family is, too. She was raised with respect and honor and I am looking forward to where our friendship will lead. Deepest regards, God bless, your daughter is incredible and will be successful because of you. Happiness and health to the Higgins family, I pray for you.

I was just advised of John's passing by a friend in Syracuse. I worked with John at BS&K when he first got out of law school. He was a class act - hard working, smart, principled - his smile could light up a room, and he could really sing!! My thoughts and prayers to his wife and daughters.

Mi spiace molto per la morte di tua padre, Jasmine, Issa, e tua marito, Katja. I wish I'd known John better, but I do remember an incredible smile and a warm heart. Feel him in your heart, and see him in your dreams. The beach will be waiting for all of you, and we will be there, too.

To Eric's wife, daughters and Bobby and Kevin
We can't imagine the sorrow in your hearts. It doesn't seem real that Eric is gone. You three boys were the center of your mom's universe, and she was so very proud of each of you. We have so many wonderful memories of our days working in the NYS Senate. We were away last week or we would have been with you. All of you are in our hearts and prayers.

Grant eternal rest to John, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.

Dear Higgins Family, I am so sorry to learn of John's passing. I was the head of the Labor group at Nixon, when John joined the firm in the Albany office and was so pleased that he decided to do so. I worked with him on several matters for General Electric and found him to be a great lawyer and an even better person. His loss at such a young age is so difficult. I pray that your memories of him and the passage of time will help ease the tremendous grief and pain which you are now experiencing. Gene Ulterino

Words can't express how very shocked and sad I am to be writing this. I had the pleasure or working with John at Nixon Peabody and still would see him from time to time in the building. He would always ask me how my son Trevor was doing and what sports he was playing as he did just a couple days before his untimely passing. He too is an athlete like his girls. Trevor and I will never forget you, your great smile and your caring and compassion for everyone you met. My heartfelt sympathies go out to you Jasmine, Isabella and Katya and the rest of the people that John called family. As you are well aware....John was a wonderful man and I consider myself blessed to have known him. I will TRULY miss him and his smile. It's going to be hard to say goodbye to somebody that was taken FAR too soon! Heaven has gained another Angel. RIP John

Unfortunately will not be able to make the services, but please know that my heart is breaking for all of you and that I will be there in thought and prayer. RIP Cuz.

Dear Higgins family, I am so very sorry for this tragic and sudden loss. John and I worked together for a number of years during his time at Nixon Peaobdy. You always knew when John was in the office and his presence just seemed to lift up the spirits of everyone around him. I particularly enjoyed his stores he would tell me, especially the one about Penny eating his Blackberry!
He touched so many lives and will be truly missed.

I will remember John as always having a smile on his face and a kind word to say. John and I sang in the choir together at The Cathedral Of All Saints back in the 70's. From time to time we would run into each other at different venues(Concerts, The Dry Cleaners, Restaurants....etc...) in the Capital Region and we would start to reminisce about his days at Academy, mine at Guilderland High and of course the Cathedral Choir. John will be greatly missed. My condolences to everyone in the family.
