Marjorie Elitzer Obituary

Elitzer, Marjorie "Maggie" EAST GREENBUSH Marjorie "Maggie" Elitzer, age 103 of East Greenbush, died on January 12, 2021, after a brief illness. She was her vibrant self, living independently in her home of 70 years until the end. Maggie was born on November 15, 1917, in Bradford, Pa., the daughter of George Wladis and Ida Hesselson Wladis. She grew up in Elmira, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Elmira College in 1939. She taught high school English in Johnstown for two years until she met Hillard Elitzer, the love of her life. Married on June 29, 1941, they had the most loving, happy, devoted marriage until Hillard's passing in 2002. After raising her three sons, Maggie went back to teaching as a full-time substitute teacher at Columbia High School in East Greenbush. She was also actively involved in a number of community endeavors, including serving as a tutor and board member of Two Together, an after-school reading program for disadvantaged youth in Albany, working as a children's advocate for CASA (a family mediation organization), co-founding a cooperative pre-school, and serving on the regional leadership council of the Girl Scouts. Maggie was brimming with talents and interests. An avid reader, she plowed through a book or two weekly. An accomplished cook and baker, she delighted in serving her family and many guests. A classical music lover, she relished the chamber music concert series to which she subscribed. A dedicated sports fan, she cheered her beloved Yankees, Knicks, and Patriots. She is survived by her three sons, Chip, Pete and Mike; six grandchildren, Daniel, Sam, Jacob, Talya, Amy, and David; and three great-grandchildren (with another on the way), Adam, Benjamin, and Ariela. Memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, The Golub Center, 184 Washington Avenue Ext., Albany, NY, 12203. My condolences to the Eliter family. I only knew your beloved mother Maggie for a brief time while working on her house. During that time she made a lasting impression on me. Her zest for life, and the love for her husband was unwavering. She lived through the first pandemic, the great depression, two world wars, and more. She told me her home was where she raised her children and wanted to remain there until the end, and she did. She truly was a treasure, rest in peace Maggie.

Chip, Pete, Mike, Death is the final destination in life; however, it's a new beginning to hold those you love close to your heart, and keep ever-present in your mind. And perhaps: G_d will open the door for reunion with your mother, Maggie, in another place and time. Shalom

To the family, I am so sorry for the loss of your mother but what a full life she had. I have fond memories of her and actually both your parents when I was younger and my Aunt (Cissy) worked at the store.
She was a gift for anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Dear Peter, Chip and Mike,
We were saddened to hear of the death of your mother. From our days in Albany, we remember a woman brimming with life, who tried to convey (hopefully with success) her interest in education and culture to you. We recall her at Peter´s home with your father; they were a beautiful couple. We hope that you will be comforted with many good memories and they will continue to inspire you to many mitzvot.

Maggie was a gem, so full of life, so gracious. She adored her family, friends and home. When I visited with her in summer of 2019, she welcomed me in, remembering well my children, inquiring about them. She spoke of her tremendously successful sons with immense pride. I reminded her of stories she shared with me decades ago about her family´s love of alpine skiing and of her beloved husband´s grave facing a double diamond trail at Hunter Mountain. She was most sincere with her compliments, generous to her guests, gracious as a hostess and a believer in life-long learning. She delighted in sharing with me her collection of the cartoon art by Theodor Seuss Geisel, customized especially for the Elitzer family. She was my "go to" substitute when I taught at CHS. She will be missed by many and remembered fondly by me always.

My deepest condolences on Maggie's passing. I met Maggie at the YMCA's Silver Sneakers class a number of years ago and loved her instantly. She was such an inspiration. As a former teacher and school principal we had many experiences to share and share we did. It was my privilege to send her numerous greeting cards and communicate with her via email. I will miss her greatly . She was a treasured friend.
