Michael McGrath Obituary

McGrath, Dr. Michael TROY Dr. Michael E. McGrath, 59, Troy physician of Lakewood Place, died Friday, August 20, 2010. Mickey died the way he lived, with courage and dignity and surrounded by his family. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Edward "Mugger" McGrath and Mary Alice Benoit McGrath and loving husband of Aileen Daly McGrath. Raised and educated in Lansingburgh, he was a graduate of Catholic Central High School, class of 1969, and an All City football and baseball athlete. Mickey was inducted into the Catholic Central Athletic Hall of Fame and received the Friends of 112th Street Sportsman Award. He graduated summa cum laude from Manhattan College in 1973 with a degree in chemical engineering. Dr. McGrath graduated from Albany Medical College, where he was voted favorite resident. He started his medical practice in Troy in 1980 with his good friend Dr. Charles Sulzman. He cared for his many patients in a kind and passionate way. He was not only their doctor, but also their friend. After retiring in 2001 due to illness, Seton Health designated "McGrath Lane" in his honor. He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and Syracuse Basketball. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. Survivors in addition to his wife, Aileen, include three children, Melissa Leach (Rick) of Delmar, Nicole McGrath and Michael McGrath, both of Troy; two grandchildren, Samantha and Daniel Leach; three brothers, Hon. Patrick J. McGrath (Louise) of Troy, Edward J. McGrath (Marilyn), Kevin B. McGrath (Erin), all of Lansingburgh; a sister, Kathleen Buckley (Robert) of East Lyme, Conn., and his beloved nieces and nephews. Mickey was predeceased by a brother, Timothy "Whitey" McGrath. Special thank you to Annmarie James and Dr. Charles Sulzman who have cared for Mickey throughout his illness and Valerie and Meredith Estess for all the love and hope you have given us. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Pawling Avenue, Troy. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Troy. Calling hours will be Tuesday 3 to 8 p.m. at McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home, corner of 109th Street and Third Avenue, Lansingburgh. Memorial donations in memory of Dr. McGrath to Project ALS, 900 Broadway, Suite 901, New York, NY 10003, would be appreciated. For online guestbook visit: www.mcloughlinmason.com

To The Entire McGrath Family,

My deepest sympathy to the entire McGrath family. I can remember the family back in the 60's and it was my priviledge to have Mickey as a friend and classmate at both CCHS and Manhattan. He provided great medical care to my brother Neil and my mom.

Mickey was a great human being, loving husband, great dad and a true friend to so many. In living his life, he taught us all a lesson in life. Mickey will be missed bot never forgotten by the Ryan family.

To The McGrath Family,

I am long removed from my native Troy but I was recently informed of Dr McGrath's death by one of my local siblings. Shortly after he started his practice Dr McGrath became my father's physician and the relationship was one of great trust and appreciation. As his heart continued to fail, I asked my parents--as an abundance of caution--for permission to involve my brother-in-law ,Dr Donald Magilligan, then an internationally renowned heart surgeon and the head of cardiac surgery at University of California Medical Center, San Francisco. Following the transfer of XRays and medical files, and with Dr McGrath's complete concurrence, the two doctors had an extended phone conversation. The late Dr Magilligan then told the Hartigan family that rarely had he met a more capable and sensitive physician and that he agreed completely with every aspect of our father's care as administered by Dr McGrath. So you will understand why I relate to the overwhelming and heartfelt tributes to this extraordinary man as so tenderly expressed in these pages . He deserves his peace. My prayers are with his wife, children and family. Maurice H. Hartigan, II, Pound Ridge, NY

I always enjoyed spending time with you and Mickey during the boys' baseball games. Your mutual love and support was certainly borne out by your faithful care for Mickey during his long illness. I am so sorry for your loss. Mickey touched me in such an unexpected way. I had not seen him since the late 90's when I covered HOSPICE INPATIENT at St Marys. We would chat in the hallway in passing and he would always say "Grace, I do not know how you do this?" I would explain the fulfillment and he would then say, well somebody has to do it, keep up the good work.
After he retired every time I would walk my dog I would pass your house and I would be brought to tears thinking of Mickey and all he was going through. Then I would be reminded of our conversations back on the units and my heart would be touched by this mans courage and sacrifice for his life with his family. I could not believe the impact that HIS life choices had on me.
He gave me new perspectives and melted my heart, God Bless you all at this time of great loss and know that you are in my prayers.

August 24, 2010

To the McGrath Family,
Although I only know some of you in passing, I cannot begin to imagine the loss you are all feeling at this time. Mickey was my doctor since I was in my early thirties and he helped me through some very traumatic and difficult times, until he could not help anymore. I will always remember the last time I saw him in the office, I was a mess, and although he was obviously suffering himself, he went out of his way to make sure that I got the care that I needed. It is now 25 or so years later and I, to this day, thank God that I knew him. May your memories of Mickey help you all through this difficult time.

To Aileen and Family,
Since first meeting Mickey at CCHS, I recognized what a wonderfully smart, talented, and self-effacing guy he was. Over the years I knew it was a true love story as you and Mickey had a wonderful love and family together. Now I've had the privilege of seeing Melissa and her family grow as well.
You had a wonderful love and life, and you have my total admiration for the manner you both handled the horrid illness that befell him. Your love will live on forever, I'm sure.
My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.

August 24, 2010

Aileen, I went to high school with you and Mickey and have memories of both of your kind, generous and caring ways even as teen agers. It was so evident even at that young age that you would end up together. They say that God has a plan for everyone. What and how well we do with that plan is left up to us. I think that part of the McGrath legacy will be the lessons of faith, strength, dignity, devotion and love that were woven into your plan and left for all of us to benefit from. Thank you and God bless.

My family and I have known Mickey for roughly four decades. We eagerly awaited his completion of his medical training so that we could all see him as our doctor. And an excellent doctor he was, as well as one of the finest human beings we have been privileged to know.

He was the doctor who recognized my father’s cancer symptoms at an early stage, making it possible for him to receive the treatment that saved his life.

He was always there for all of us, reliable, conscientious, compassionate, and clinically competent in the highest degree. I had some problems that doctors I previously saw were unable to help me with. But Mickey succeeded where others had not. He always knew what to do. I had complete confidence in him, for he had what it took to inspire that confidence.

Whenever I saw Mickey, I saw not only an excellent doctor, but a caring friend.

There are no words adequate to the tragedy that befell him. But he lived life in the best way, combining great personal achievement with outstanding beneficence to others. He lives on in heaven and in the hearts of all those he touched. Few of us can equal him, but we can all improve ourselves by trying to emulate him.

R.I.P. Mickey

Aileen,

I can only imagine the emptiness you and your family are enduring at this time. Having recently witnessed your overweening strengths; love, hope, loyalty and compassion (to name a few) I am confident Mickey’s passing brings a measure of peace and comfort.

Knowing you and your brother long before Mickey came into the picture it was always obvious to me that nothing but the best would do. You and Mickey surely marched to the same drummer. You two are ‘sole mates’ in every sense.

After moving to Florida I never got to know Mickey well but I vividly remember your brother saying one day that, “Mickey is a no holes bared kind-a guy. Don’t ask the question if ya can’t handle the truth”. Coming from Paul those few words spoke volumes to me of your Husbands character and attitude toward life. Also, after reading all the entries in this Guest Book your Brother was right on the mark.

My wife and I send our deepest heart felt condolences to you and family.
We wish you all the best during this time of bereavement.

To the family of Dr. Michael McGrath,

Although Dr. McGrath's brother, Pat, and I have known each other for years as members of the Rensselaer County Bar Association, it was never my privilege to have met your loved one during his lifetime. From the obituary notice, it is apparent that he was an extraordinary man who touched the lives of many in a positive way. Although not expressly stated in the notice, I surmise that Dr. McGrath succumbed to ALS. Both the father and the brother of my wife,
Roberta, suffered the devastating effects of Huntington's Disease during their dramatically shortened lives. If Dr. McGrath's death becomes a beacon for increased research into the cause and cure of his debilitating disease, then his passing will not have been in vain.

It is hoped that memories of happy shared times together will provide a measure of solace during this difficult period.

There are very few people we meet on our journey that regardless of how brief a period we knew them and how many years have passed since we have seen them, leave a lasting impression. One whose work ethic is so suprerior, character so strong, and star so bright that we not only remember them long after our paths cross but also tell our own children about - Mickey is that person. Our deepest sympathy to Aileen, Mickey's family, and all those fortunate to have had Mickey as a constant in their lives.

For Dr McGraths' family, I worked with him at St Marys hospital for 5 yrs. He was a very kind and compassionate man. Never raised his voiced to staff, always showed concern for those in his care. The next few months and yrs will not be easy without him but recall your treasured memories fondly and with love. His spirit will always be around you to give you comfort. May you rest assured, he is now in a special place with the Lord.
