Dean Hawkins was an awesome cool mentor, advisor and guide -- always there to help every students. I first met him in 1989 at RPI's Lally School of Management and he has made a positive impact on my career. We kept in touch since, and spoke to him in July 2008. Many alums have shared how he had a positive impact in their career. His goodness and value touched many. I am still in shock at his loss. Recently in June 2008, He provided guidance to my 15 year old and helped him in decision making to undergo summer program at Johns Hopkins to gain new experiences and prepare for his college years. He touched many generations. We will miss him very much. We send our deepest condolenses to the Hawkins family and Ms Estelle Hawkins.

I was totally shocked when I learned the sudden death of Bob Hawkins. I saw him last May when he came to our Campus as an outside reviewer of our U.S. Department of Education's Business International Education(BIEL) grant program.

He was always gentle, knowledgeable, and caring. We talked about the growth of International Business Programs over the years and his experiences as President of the AIB. He was a decent person, treating senior professors, junior faculty and Ph.D. students fairly and respectably. He did serve the AIB well with great devotion.

I was one of his Ph.D. students at the Stern Business School of New York University. We kept our professional relationship all these years.. I have learnwed a great deal from Bob not only professional knowledge but also persoanl character building and ethical values.
He loved Korean food.

He will be missed by all of his friends and colleagues. My wife, Kyung and I send our deepest sympathy and condolences to Estelle and his beloved family.

Robert (Bob) G. Hawkins to all of us at Georgia Tech CIBER was boss, patient guide,
challenging program innovator, empowering mentor, and caring friend, at our side since November 1992. His loss is both personal and institutional and our thoughts turn to you Estelle, to your family, at this time of grief and also to alll of Bob's friends. We have lost a rare human being --compassionate, accepting and generous-- and a great colleague.

Bob was unique in his combination of the goodness of the Midwest, the savvy of New York, the analytical mind of the economist, and the reach of a true internationalist. His memory lives on daily with us.

Thank you Bob for all you have meant and continue to mean to all of us.

Deep condolences to you Estelle and family,

John

Bob Hawkins was such a nice, giving person. He was my teacher and mentor at NYU. His course on economics of multinational corporations was very popular and, when first introduced, was perhaps the first of its kind in US business schools. I worked on a UN project with him. As a member of my dissertation committee, he gave me much-needed support and guidance. I remember him saying that I “should not sell myself short.” He was one of the towering early pioneers at AIB and NYU, yet he was always unpretentious, gracious and humorous. I will miss him dearly.

Dear Estelle,

Like many other friends and admirers of Bob, we were heart-broken to learn the sad news.
We would like to acknowledge Bob’s contribution to Texas A&M International University. As a founding member of the Global Advisory Board of the PhD Program, he provided valuable advice and counsel to the University and to me personally. Not only did he lend his name and prestige to the program and the University, but attended the inaugural meeting of the Board in 2004, and several other meetings, including the annual conference and the PhD Students Consortium meetings subsequently. He also led the faculty retreat at the A. R. Sanchez, JR., School of Business and gave support to our students on many occasions. Bob also served on the Editorial Advisory Board of our quarterly, International Trade Journal, by giving advice and reviewing manuscripts. We are all grateful to him for having helped us generously and graciously, and will remember him fondly.
Personally, I already miss Bob’s friendship and wise counsel. Nancy and I join your army of friends to send our condolences to you and the Hawkins family.

Dear Estelle –

I wanted to say how saddened I was to hear of Bob’s death. I had always hoped to see him again, to visit with him and get to know him again as an adult.

We are cousins, as you know. He was eleven years older. I knew him most when he was a young athlete in Gower, MO. His parent’s farm was next to my grandparent’s farm and I can still see him driving his tractor across my grandparent’s front pasture. He played catch with me (he was long considered one of the best athletes ever to come from Gower) and was always very kind and friendly.

When I did surprise him at his office in New York (in the early to mid-eighties), he made time for us, taking us next door for a drink, inquiring about the health and well-being of so many relatives and friends from his life in Gower, giving me copies of his books. I remember Floyd and Aunt Grace, his father and mother, so very well and felt I saw so much of Floyd in Bob’s picture.

My mother told me that early in Bob’s college career, he was always contemplating not going back to school. So interesting given the heights to which he soured academically and professionally.

I was delighted to hear that he recently was voted into the William Jewell Athletic Hall of Fame – one of William Jewell’s great halfbacks. How terrific! I remember asking him in New York if, as he was going to sleep at night, he thought back on the runs and plays he made in college. He said that his thoughts of that sort usually take him back to high school.

How very far he traveled from that farm and that very small town. I remember people talking about how they would see him running the country roads to get in shape. He was a hero in our family – as I’m sure you know -- someone everyone respected and about whom nothing ill was ever said.

I’m saddened for your loss and saddened, as well, that I will not get to know him again. My condolences to you and your family.

My heart is so heavy with the loss of Uncle Bobby. When I was little I loved his hair cut and liked to touch his "teddy bear hair" as I called it. I also loved his sense of humor. It was dry, quick and he would make some sort of comment with every conversation. I also loved the time I came to Atlanta while you were there and I stayed at your home. I remember you took me out for a drive to see the beautiful homes and we got lost...or a least one of you thought so. I was just enjoying the view.

When Jeremy went through a tough surgery in 2001 Uncle Bobby would always ask about him and how he was doing. His care and concern meant so much to me.

I am also SO grateful that both of you were able to come out to celebrate Mom's 80th birthday last year. At dinner on Friday night at the hotel, Uncle had an Angus beef hamburger, but he thought it really tasted like Hereford beef instead. Ok..go figure. The birthday celebration included a photo shoot, with professional pictures taken of everyone. Those pictures are very special to me.

Aunt Estelle, Paul and Kenneth, my heart and prayers are with you and the family during this time. He will be missed as there will only be one "Uncle Bobby". May you keep the memories of him close to your heart during this tough time.

Bob was the dean who hired me into RPI and who founded and watched over our innovative DSES department. I remember his tellling us about a college prank he pulled in his youth: hanging a sign in the chapel saying "The Dean is a Weenie". I guess he didn't anticipate his own path toward deandom, but he sure was a great one. It was an honor to have known him.

Estelle and family,

I cannot express my sadness hearing of your loss. Our daily calls were always punctuated with humor - a pleasant reminder of graciousness often lacking in everyday interactions. I have admired Bob for his uncommon wisdom, and for his respectful advise. What started as a starightforward business engagement has turned into a cherished friendship that I shall miss. Please know that you are all in my family's prayers. I and my partners at Berkery Noyes are grateful to have had the great fortune of not only knowing Bob, but are better for having worked with him. If there is any way that I can ever be of assistance, please do not hesitate to call upon me. I promised Bob that I would shovel his driveway when this deal ever closed. I am sad that he will not get a chance to smile at such a sight. God bless you all.

I have many great memories of Dean Hawkins. When I was a grad student at Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute he used to question whether I was an only child because I was always trying to get his attention. He wrote me a great letter of recommendation and helped me get my career launched. I will miss him.
