Rose M. Shields

UTICA, N.Y. Mrs. Rose M. Shields, 80, of Utica, died January 3, 2003 at the Presbyterian Home. She was born July 7, 1922 in Shenandoah, Pa., daughter of the late Phillip and Julia August Reznik. She graduated from St. Casimirs Elementary School and J.W. Cooper High School in 1940. She then graduated from the Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia in 1943. She was an accomplished violinist and was the only female member of the Medical School Orchestra. She proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a nurse in Virginia, Philadelphia and Maryland. She was married to George H. Shields, MD, April 23, 1946 in the Chapel of the U.S. Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md. Dr. Shields died in 1995. Mrs. Shields worked in her husbands medical practice office for many years. She was a member of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes and the Womens Auxiliary of the Oneida County Medical Society. A gentle and generous person, she will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a devoted wife and mother. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, George H., Jr. and Jan Shields of Babcock Lake, N.Y. and Robert M. and Michele Shields of Niskayuna; her beloved grandchildren, G. Zachary Shields of Latham, Jacob Shields of Albany, Michael Shields and Meredith Shields, both of Niskayuna; two sisters, Helen Gofrank of Grosse Point Farms, Mich. and Boca Raton, Fla. and Blanche Mialki of Ogdensburg, N.J.; several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Friedel, Williams, Coriale and Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford and at 11 a.m. at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are on Monday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. In memory of Mrs. Shields, contributions may be made to the St. Elizabeth Medical Center School of Nursing.
