I had the privilege of meeting Dr and Mrs Carney while they lived at Cypress Village. I was one of the caregivers and spent lots of time with Mary Jane while Doctor helped out at the local food kitchen, so like him, he was a wonderful man. After he discontinued services he sent me a beautiful letter of reference that I did not even ask for, always so kind. I was so deeply sorry to hear Dr Carney had passed on, sympathies to the family.
Respectfully,

My sincere condolences. When I opened my office just down the road from Steve's, it wasn't more than a few days before he stopped in and welcomed me. I'm not sure if it was faith or sympathy for a fellow Hoya, but he was generous in his support to help me succeed. I am grateful for his insight and advice over the years. I have missed him since his retirement and will remember him always.

Dear Mary Frances,
Your Dad's passing is sad news: The world needs as many Georgetown Dental alumni as it can get! I am sorry for your loss. Haven't seen you in many years, but please know that am thinking of you now, hoping you're able to find peace during what must be a difficult time.
Yours,
-Andy Alpart

Steve was the best of us. He was bright, alert, certainly humorous, an able pianist. And obviously a well-qualified dental surgeon. He was fun to be with, always interesting. It was an honor to be his friend.
I just re-read Henry Cardinal Newman's well-known description of a gentlemen, brought to my attention by a good Jesuit priest Freshman year at Holy Cross. In these times where civility is lacking, Newman's words strongly suggest my classmate Steve. May he rest in peace.

Our loss is heaven's gain. A lifetime of friendship and I look forward to singing Old Mamie Reilly with him in the sight of our God.
