Here are a few words I wrote to honor my uncle, they were read at his funeral:
Uncle David was a man of few words, so I’ll make this short. The term ‘eulogy' comes from the Greeks, meaning literally ‘words of praise; Uncle David never longed for praise. He didn’t brag about his accomplishments (we did that for him). He never looked to be the center of attention, he never craved fame or envied those in the spot light, but he helped make them look good. His life was spent doing things for others, to make their lives and jobs easier and safer. Uncle David’s passion for NASCAR led him to work for some of the finest drivers and teams NASCAR had to offer. But there was so much more to his life. He wore many hats: He was a devoted father, husband, brother, son, Uncle, cousin, friend and so many other hats he proudly wore.
My Uncle David was my hero, when I was little I truly believed that he was Tarzan, He had the golden curls, the dark tan, strong arms. When my father died, my Uncle David stepped in to fill a void that was left in my life; I never really took the time to thank him for that so I’ll do it now. “Thank you Uncle David for being there for me when I needed you most.”
I remember going to his shop in Macclenny after school and spending time talking with him or just watching him work. For those of you who personally knew my Uncle David, you couldn’t talk to him and be distracted, you had to pay close attention or you wouldn’t catch everything he was saying, and I wanted to be sure to get it all.
Uncle David is in heaven now and we are here at his funeral. This is not the time for us to grieve his death but it’s our time to celebrate his life. Don’t ever forget Uncle David. He never wanted to see people cry. He wanted to make everyone happy. So at this moment when we are about to lay his body to rest, let’s all think back and remember how Uncle David touched our lives. How he made us laugh and how good Uncle David was as a person. This is not the moment for us to shed our tears but we should all be thankful that we were given the chance to have known a man named David Wilson Roberts.
You will be greatly missed. love Vickie
