Harry Dunkle Obituary

DUNKLE Harry Newton Dunkle died July 26, 2008 in Orange Park, FL at the age of 90. Born February 15, 1918, he was the son of Harry Lee Dunkle and Lillian Livingston Dunkle. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Caroline Hughes Dunkle in 2000. Harry was born and raised in Lock Haven, PA where he graduated from Lock Haven High School. He then attended The Kiski Preparatory School in Saltsburg, PA. He earned a BA from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was in the Sigma Nu fraternity, captain of the football team, and recipient of the E. Carrington Smith Most Valuable Player Award (1942). Until recently, he held a national collegiate record for the longest average punt per season, 49.9 yards. He played in the Blue/Gray game of 1942. In 1943 he married Caroline Hughes of Jacksonville, FL. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a gunnery captain on the destroyer Woodworth in the South Pacific. Shortly after the war, the family settled in St. Petersburg, FL where we was a custom home builder for about 30 years. After retiring from general contracting, he began a second career teaching as head of the Architectural and Civil Engineering department at Pinellas Vocational Technical Institute. Harry is survived by his three children Karyl Davis (Larry) of Ft. Myers, Barbara Field (David) of St. Petersburg, and Kurt Dunkle (Cathleen) of Jacksonville; seven grandchildren Caroline Hughes (Chris), Nancy Dietrich, Dorothea Reiff, Bess Posada (Mauricio), Newton Reiff, Caroline Dunkle, and Madeline Dunkle; and four great grandchildren Andrew Bansal, Harrison Hughes, Max Hughes, and Finlay Posada. A funeral will be held on Saturday, August 16 at 10:30am at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1200 Snell Isle Blvd., St. Petersburg, FL 33704. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church or to Grace Episcopal Church, 245 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park, FL 32073. HARRY WAS A FELLOW OFFICER AND CLOSE FRIEND ON USS WOOWORTH. ONE OF THE FINEST GUYS I EVER KNEW. WE SHARED SOME INTERESTING TIMES TOGETHER BUT WERE BLESSED TO SHARE LOTS OF LAUGHS TOO.

So sorry to hear of your dad death. I have such good memories of him when he built my first home 40 years ago. He was a man of quality and it is shown in that the house remains in excellent condition now. He will be missed. Ed hamas
