I´m not sure why this showed up on my Facebook page today. It´s been a while since you´ve been gone. Dru lived across the street from me on fourth Avenue for a short time. I was trying to learn to play guitar and he was already and accomplished musician but he let me play some rhythms while he practiced his lead. I saw him not long before he died at a gas station on Beach Boulevard. He was headed for a gig with Dr. Hector.

Dru, it's been almost 19 years since you passed. I will always remember the time I got to spend with you. It was pleasure booking you and your bands, Dr. Hector & The Groove Injectors and Grinderswitch and spending time in Memphis, TN for the Blues Awards. The last time I saw you was in a little blues club in Marietta, GA and we were talking about "The Purpose Driven Life." I know you are with our Lord and Saviour now with other friends and family. I look forward to seeing you again when God's finished with me here on earth. Thanks for the music and your friendship brother!

I was really saddened when i read that there was a Dr. Hector Tribute... i had not heard of Dru's passing but would like to say that he and his family are in my prayers. He helped paved the way for many other musicians too who loved blues music and helped make sure it stays true.

My wife Mary knew Dru longer than I, but I met him in 85. What a humble man with huge talent. In those days I was in a metal band and he took us to Cypress Recording Studios and engineered our demo. I remember him making us feel important. I saw him two years ago, when I moved back to town and we talked blues. I know where he is now, there is nothing for him to be blue about. We'll miss him for sure. When I get up there, I'd love to lay a back beat down with you my brother. Billy Box

I was always inspired by how Drew did what made him happy and was so darn good at it. To me, it was so cool that one of our own beach boys was a world class muscian who played with the greatest talents in the world and held his own and then some. Drew was very real, down home...and also very talented. He will be missed, but Drew's musical legacy will never die.

I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Grinderswitch and the Winters Brothers in Savannah, Georgia way back in the 70's. It was a memorable show as I remember that Dru tore it slap down and the rafters in the place were never the same. Dru...if you can read this...the blues seem way more bluer now that you've left us...but while you were on this God's Earth..the blues were more than blue...THEY WAS PLUM DAMN ELECTRIC ! ! ! Ride on brother and give all those other pickers on the other side what for ! !

Dr. Hector, a man who lives on in our hearts and rockin' souls. I've got "Cure For The Common Groove" on the box right now, boy that cat can play! Seems to me that one of the sweetest blessing that can come to one in life is if you can make someone happy. Dru did it for thousands with his music and by always being the Southern gentleman. I'm proud to have known the man, and will offer my hearts handshake every time one of those great tunes of his goes running around inside my mind. Great and gentle sprits endure. 1974, 16 years old and listening to a band called Grinderswitch prompted me to hitch to Macon, GA. from Greensboro, N.C. to see what was happening down there. 1987, from a second floor beach house in N.Myrtle Beach, S.C. hearing "Pickin' the Blues" and going to investigate, I saw the DR. and met Dru for the first time
beginning a 19 yr. friendship. No one ever touched me musically like the music of Dru Lombar. God, how I'll miss him.

Dru and I were neighbors in Macon - high up on the hill above the hospital overlooking downtown. We caught up with one another again in Jacksonville in the early 90s.
He was an outstanding picker but an even more outstanding person.
When I played in a Christian band, we called what we played The Glads rather than the blues. I guess that's what Dru is playing now.

With a saddened heart I am writing this.
I knew Dru for such a short time during my high school years at the beach. He and the band, Soul Searchers, was my first introduction to live music and I will be eternally grateful. As a teenage girl, I sang and danced each night they played at the local y-teen dances and to this day I can still feel the energy of those songs and the freedom the music filled me with.
He was more then just a friend and musician, he was an inspiration. The music he produced and played filled your heart, your soul and your spirit. It made you move and elevated you to a higher place.
Rock on Dru Lombar, rock on and may the music you are making now filter down to us and give us peace.

I met Dru here in Jax back in 1986, he came into my studio to produce this Heavy Metal Group. I was in awe, as Dru was already a Legendary Guitar Player and I very much respected Him. He knew how to get a group to play the best and really better than they could have on their own. The Best times were when we got to spend time talking about the Lord and how good He is and look what He had done for us. He loved playing the Guitar and Loved Singing for people, but his real passion was his Love for God and his realationship with Jesus Christ. Keep on playing for the Lord. We will remember you...

I am going to miss the truly talented musician, performer, composer, recording artist, and southern gentleman. What the southern reigns he has held and what worldly gifts he has given will forever remain in all who knew and worked with Mr. Dru Lombar.
I met Dru in 1971 when he was in a band called Magi, it was an early autumn in Jacksonville, and some chicken ranch farmers were putting on a free concert. Every body was doing great until the generator blew-up and someone started a fire in the nearby woods.
As the years passed away Dru moved back to Jacksonville and from time to time I was able to catch his act at Pier 7 and then at Magnolia?s. Of course I was able to jam with the band after the show, but it was gratifying. I was asked twice to be his bassist but I had to turn him down because I was already committed to my family.
I would check in once and awhile with him and he always met me with a smile and friendly greeting, and invites me in to hear his latest projects. The wizard he became with all this new technology but you might catch him say that reel to reel was his choice of mastery.
?Will you know my name if I make it to heaven?? God Bless.

I witnessed Andrew fighting to live to the end. He even tried to get out of the bed in ICU. I knew in my heart that God wanted him home. What God wants he asks for. Our life is but a vapor... we are here today and gone tomorrow. Today is September 11, 2005; a day that changed my life; with events like the twin towers, the tsunami, hurricane Katrina and now Andrews passing. We never know when it’s our time to go. Please make sure your heart is right with God through Jesus because you may not ever get a second chance. Dru impacted my life also...when I tried to talk to Dru…sometimes he would respond.. Other times he wouldn't…. God reminded me and said sometimes I try to talk to you Marv and you’re not paying attention. I will miss Dru, but know I will see him soon on the other side. He is in a better place now; singing a happy song to the Master and no longer singing the Blues. Much in Jesus to all…Love Marvin.

I met Dru, and Larry at a small show in Houston @1974. As I stepped up to a fixture in the mens room before the show, Larry was stepped up next to me, Les Paul strapped on, warming up before the show. I thought that was hard core! I had a Southern Rock band, 3 guitar/2 drum etc , all original, and Grinderswitch and the Outlaws hung the moon for me. They played that place possessed! A leslie with a dual showman head put teeth in the keys few ever had, My keyboard man had a bruise from me hitting him every key solo. going seee!!!! That's how it's done! The next gig , there was a marshall driving that leslie of ours. Dru had power and melody few could comprehend. I drew a lot of inspiration from him many times when tired , or lost on stage..kiss the blues good by! Dru had the time to talk to an enthusiast after a road show where things wern't going right. I think my brother Tom Wittrock bought Dru's 335 to let them pay for a truck repair on the road, if after 30 yrs, and too much fun, that's close to correct. God Bless..........Dru, gone, far from forgotten Hell yeah!!!!!!! Bart W.

Another page of life has been turned with Dru's graduation from his journey here on earth.Although music was his life, Jesus Christ was his first love/passion. His faith carried him through many hard times and the glory of his music abilities he gave to God. A humble and good man and a friend to all.
I have wonderful memories tucked away in my heart of Dru and I know that the music world is shocked at his passing but try not to grieve for Dru has reached his ultimate goal and he had a blast getting there!
Acknowledging his gain is joy and our loss sadness. My prayers go out to his family, friends and fans.Seek the comforter that Dru so often did.Jesus Christ.....

In the early 70's i moved to Jax Beach to play in a band called America's Children. After about a year our bass guitarist announced that he was leaving to play in a band called Magi.Well i went to hear them on one of their first shows.Let me tell you i was not at all prepared for what i heard and saw.Dru's originals and arrangements of older blues tune totally blew me away. When asked to join the band as keyboard player and second guitar i jumped at the chance.Even though i was only in the band a short time we got to open for Joe Cocker(Tampa Stadium)and (West,Bruce, and Lang).Dru taught me so much about life and music. In a song called Reflections Of Myself Dru sang We're all the same song, sung by different singers,we're all the same hand, but with different fingers.I think i now know what he meant. In the thirty some years that has passed i have never sat down behind a keyboard or picked up a guitar without thinking of Dru Lombar. Now that's making an impact on someone. My Deepest Sympathies Go To Dru's Family And All The Players And Friends That He Made So Happy

In 1987-1988 I was one of the fortunate few who got to work with Dru in Dr. H and the G.I.s. I think I learned more about music in that short period of time than all of the previous years combined. He never failed to inspire me to perform to the best of my ability.

I met Dru backstage in the late '70s or early '80s when Grinderswitch was touring with Pure Prairie League & D.A. Coe. He was a big, friendly, happy guy that played with his heart & soul. My friend Tom was with me that night & somehow Tom bought Dru's old sunburst 335 with the white DiMarzio in the bridge. I ending up getting that guitar 20-some years later and now that guitar will have even more special memories for me. God bless you, Dru, on your journey and thanks for the wonderful jams & memories (& soulful licks...) I'll pray for your family & loved ones left behind...

well ... the quandary for "us" is missing our friend, brother and fellow musician here on this earth; but KNOWING he's standing right next to Jesus now and forever - I refuse the "spirit of grief" to access my mind & heart - instead, I will smile knowing that Dru led many to God's Kingdom through the gift that God placed in his heart! Ephesians 2:10
From Marvin Kaye's music store in 1967 to the Vineyard church this year; we shared some "stories." It was an honor to know you on this earth my friend - I'll see you when I finish this race and "we gonna; jam FOREVER" ( maybe longer!!!!)
Hopefully we'll have mansion's in the same neighborhood! Strike up the band!

God bless you Dru. I first met Dru while surfing when we were attending junior high. At the beginning of the eleventh grade Dru invited me to play trumpet in his soul band. The next two years of touring every weekend with Dru and the band was a dream come true. The many life experiences that Dru, the band and myself shared were priceless. How we stayed out of jail remains a mystery to me. I was always amazed at how Dru could write a song in a matter of minutes. Not to mention how he could play a varity of instruments. It was a privilege to play with you and grow up with you at the beach. I'll miss bumping into you at the post office these past several years.

I first saw Dru in New York City (a college gym as I recall). The bill was Elvin Bishop and Marshall Tucker. During Elvin Bishop, Toy Caldwell brought Dru out on stage for a little jamming. Elvin didn't know who Dru was and introduced him as Stu or something.
As I listene to them play a few blues tunes, I remember saying, wow, this "Stu" guy can play! A few days later, I found out about Grinderswitch and saw them open for Marshall Tucker a time or two later that year.
Much later I lived in Jacksonville, and got a chance to see Dru again a number of times as Dr. Hector although the first time I saw him I didn't realize it was the one and the same Dru Lombar.

30 years of friendship and musical memories, from Central Park to the bowels of tiny Flipside Studios with a small gathering of friends. As long as Dru was playing, the venue was of little consequence and he was happy. Through Dru we were fortunate to establish and maintain many cherished and wonderful relationships, especially those of Stephen Miller,Joe Dan Petty and Slugger Trask. His music has book marked the memories of our lifetime which will be fondly recalled and always reinforced through this music. We'll miss the downtime spent together between gigs on the road and many conversations with Dru always leaving me with a great anticipation of the next musical endeavor we'd discussed. That anticipation of music anew will be difficult to live without but his historical musical legacy will continue to soar and lessen our grief as time passes on. It is difficult to come to grips that we will no longer be able to communicate in this life and heartfelt condolences to Mary, Hannah and Savannah and Dru's extended musical family. One last time in unison from the "folks from Baldwin" a hearty farewell with a rousing chorus of "AIN'T GOT THE BLUES NO MORE!" One Love friend, Chris and Ena Clegg

I met Dru some 15 years ago. A friend of mine had mentioned he knew these guys in a band, and they might want some roadies. The next three years with Dru Lombar and Doctor Hector were probably the best three years of my youth. I will never forget my 21st birthday with Dru in Toronto Canada, man that was awesome (Warrant, Trickster and Metallica were in the same hotel 3 floors up) what a night. Thank you Dru for spending all those hours with me playing guitar, thank you Dru for pulling over on the side of the road at 3am after a long night because I drank too much(again LOL). That was a long time ago, then I spoke with Dru and he mentioned needing a web-site, and for the last three years I have been keeping the Grinderswitch web-train rollin. Thank you Dru for having faith in me, who would have known little joe joe the dancin fool ends up building your website. My thoughts and prayers are with Mary and the girls, and all those who were close to Dru. Thank you everyone who visits the Grinderswitch website. I love you and I miss you Dru, my brother of the road. May the good lord let our paths cross again.

To the Family of Dru,
My brother Joey (Davies) was a friend of Dru's & worked as road crew with him (Grinderswitch) for a number of years. Joey thought the world of Dru. I so appreciated Dru remembering him in the dedication of the new Grinderswitch album. I can't tell you what a nice e-mail he sent me when I purchased the album & thanked him for remembering Joey (who died in 1991). He was a wonderful guitarist & a wonderful person. I am so sorry for your loss and I know he will be remembered for what he did in this world. No person can ask more of life than to be missed by so many & to be remembered for caring & doing good for others. I will keep his family & friends in my thoughts & prayers. Sincerely, Mary

I am very sad at the passing of Dru Lombar. I had a chance to correspond with Dru whose music had an everlasting effect on me from the first time I first heard him play with Grinderswitch in the early 1970's. I grew up in NYC, and we loved his music. What great talent. He once emailed me once with a question after I had posted something on the Grinderswitch site. Just like that... I was thrilled. I found him to be funny and a pleasure to talk to, and like so many, I hoped to see a great return of Dru along with Grinderswitch. The music world has lost an underappreciated wonderful musician, and we all have lost a fine person. Rest in Peace Dru, your music will always be with us.

One of my big regrets is I never got to meet Dru or see his playing in person. Over the last 5 years we exchanged a lot of emails. I remember the first email I got from Dru and couldn't believe one my favourite artists had just sent me an email. I am a New Zealander & I have all the Grinderswitch & Dr Hector albums and they all get played a lot. Not many people get to leave behind a legacy that is enjoyed by people around the world.
You will be missed by many Dru.

Dru from the bottom of our hearts and with our staff we will truly miss you brother. From all the artist and bands we promote, our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
Although Dru we never even spoke on the telephone or even met in person we did help you move your music up a notch for the world to hear. Which you so much deserve. I will continue to let them hear it. Your music will live on!!! I will miss all those emails from you weekly. Your Brother Ray Carver

It was my great honor to get to know Dru in the early eighties in Macon through a ministry we were both involved in while I was a student at Mercer University. Dru was certainly one of my guitar heroes, but also a wonderful person and friend.

Gone but never forgotten, his music has brought many smiles to my life and always will. A fine man and a fine musician. Sadness for the family's loss, happiness from the beautiful music he left us with.

From Long Island I pass along our condolences to the Lombar family on the passing of a wonderful man. This was a fellow who honestly cared about his fellow human beings. Sure Dru was a great guitar player, song writer, a fellow who entertained with all his mind and heart, but I know he was a family man and benevolent human being. Our extended family has lost a real friend and there are no words from me that will soothe the loss. To state that Dru was one of the good ones would be to state the obvious.
I would be dishonest if I did not mention for the record that I am so happy that I have so much of Dru's music to remember him by in addition to all the times I was fortunate to have seen him play in person.
God bless Dru Lombar; you'll be missed throughout Long Island, the United States and Europe. Remember us to the good Lord, my friend.

It was an honor to meet & know Dru over the years.........helping him acheive some NEW prospective band/musical goals to play music on the road once again.
I learned of GRINDERSWITCH in the 70's in high school. I could not wait to get to the record store and pick up Macon Tracks, honing my drumming and band skills working in the Trenton, NJ clubs playing the music to one of my Southern Rock idols, Dru Lombar.
As years passed, playing in bands, we met and stayed in touch as, like "The South stays in touch with the North" - I really considered Dru as a musical mentor and will always look up to his "cool laid back style"....I miss your conversations thru cell & emails.........May you continue on "Pickin' The Blues" my friend from the South!!! This Dr. was truly the King of Slide/Southern Style Guitar.

It has truly been a heartbreaking year for old Southern Rockers like me. I cannot believe my friend Dru is gone now too. His last show was with us here at GRITZFEST and he was in top form. What can I say? Dru was a dear friend and I will remember him always. A great guitarist and singer, and a helluva human being.

As a member of The Soul Searchers, I have counted Dru a friend since 1964. For three years we played music together and surfed the waves off Neptune Beach. When the four of us finally reunited as a band and friends, we too soon lost our lead guitarist and a dear friend. Dru, may God keep you safe in his arms forever. Your brother in music. We grew up together next door on Oleander St., our birthdays only 3 months apart. All Dru ever wanted to do was play music (he used to do a great Elvis--even had the leg shake). He convinced me that I needed to be a drummer, and was his drummer in his first band (The Continentals--played at the Robert Meyers Hotel), and his second (The Soul Searchers ["The World Famous..."]--who got back together recently, thank goodness). I do not weep for Dru, because he did exactly what he wanted to do with his life--play music. How many can claim that? And who can dispute the worthiness of his desire?

I am so sorry to learn of Dru's passing. I met him in the hospital as a musician of "Body and Soul". Debbie Rider and I sang for Dru bedside. I noticed a calmness in him when we started to sing. Knowing what a talented musician he was, I feel honored to have had the privilege of singing for him. The angels are singing to him now!My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Many of us go back to Jr. High school days with Dru. He was right there with the rest of us helping raise the bar for what would one day be known as the new sound from N Fla. He never received the credit due him from the general public, but we fellow musicians loved and respected his talent and contributions. From the entire Blackfoot family, rest in peace Dru, and our thoughts and prayers go to your family and those closest to you....Greg T.

Dru, you will be sorely missed by your Church family too, and I am truly honored to have played in the Praise band with you, and enjoyed being in your studio with Robert. We know you are in a much better place now, and the look in your eyes while you were still in that hospital bed seemed to say that you were ready to pull that train to the Pearly Gates! Hope to jam with you again when my time comes!

We will always remember our friend Dru. He ate at our home, we played music together, we laughed, and cried together. Dru mastered and played most of the tracks on Donna's Demo CD. Which was unbelievably cool! When we needed a picker to bail us out in a pinch, Dru always said, "Why not?" I'll always remember one night when we had a request for a song and I asked him if he knew it. His response: "If somebody played it somewhere, we can do it!" We always did the song! Dr. Hector was our friend and he will leave us with memories we can hold dear forever. Dave & Donna "One Track Mind"

Dru, your spirit will live forever in my heart. Nobody in the world will ever take your place in my life. The bond we have shared over the past 25 years could never be replaced by anybody in the world. I know I will see you again one day, but down here, I will miss you more than words can ever say. You will always be my precious Dru. Until we meet again.........

I remember Dru before he started playing "barefoot". He was a great talent back when he was still a teen and matured into an even greater talent over the years. As the song goes... "If there's a Rock n Roll heaven, ya know they gotta helluva band." They just got one more of the best pickers I ever knew. Rock on, Dru.

I was/am a big fan of Southern Rock and at one time i suppose i had about every bands albums, including Grinderswitch. Dru and i had contacted each other a few times thru e mails and i had purchased some Grinderswitch CDs thru him. He truly was as great of a person as he was a guitar player. Rest in peace brother, you won't be forgotten.
