Robert Sackett Obituary

SACKETT
Robert Vance Sackett lived a life filled with love and happiness. He was born in Kingston, NY to Eula Jean Cook Sackett and George Robert Sackett and grew up in Jamesburg, NJ. Growing up he was an active Boy Scout and enjoyed playing baseball with the neighborhood kids. He attended Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV where he played soccer and received a BA in psychology. When he graduated in 1969, he was drafted and joined the U.S. Navy. He served as a corpsman and ran a psych unit at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital. After he got out of the Navy, he moved to Columbus, OH to join friends who lived there. He worked at The Ohio State University hospital in the physical med and rehab section. While there, he met his lifelong sweetheart, Ellen Hambrick. They married in 1976 and had two precious daughters, Leslie and Corrine, who have grown up to be wonderful women and have given him a lifetime of joy. He went to nursing school at Grant Hospital in Columbus and worked jobs in various settings including the ER, open heart recovery, cath lab, and home health. During his last few years with Baptist Home Health he was a wound and ostomy nurse. He loved being a nurse and helping people. He loved his coworkers at Baptist. He enjoyed traveling, hiking, walking, kayaking, being outside, listening to all kinds of music, going to concerts, and hanging with friends. Among activities he enjoyed with friends were brewing beer with Ken Stevens, golfing, including his annual golf trip with Bill Harris and other Jackson county buddies, keeping up with friends on Facebook, and his Bunco group. He attended Orange Park United Methodist Church (OPUMC) and was an active member of the Koinonia Sunday school class. He is survived by his loving wife Ellen, daughters Leslie (Adam) Lohse and Corrine Sackett (Greg Izard), three grandchildren Benjamin Lohse, Alethea Lohse, and Maddy Izard, sisters Judy Venable (Denny) and Pam Bradford (Dick), sisters-in-law Gail Steele (Mike), Paige Gottlieb (Don), and Denise Hambrick. He is also survived by Aunt Margaret, several nieces and nephews, cousins, and good friends. He was insightful, thoughtful, loving, and had a fantastic sense of humor. He loved his dogs, Bella and Rudy, and teasing and hanging out with the grandkids. He will be greatly missed. We would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Baptist Medical Center and at Haven Hospice for their kind and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory are welcome at OPUMC Good Samaritan Ministry, Haven Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
A service will be held at OPUMC on Monday, March 12th at noon.

Dear Ellie,
you may not remember me since we only met once, but my memory of you is clear.
Bob and I were close . . . . we grew up together, worked and played together and got in trouble together repeatedly during his years in Jamesburg and mine in East Brunswick, along with our ram-around buddies of Larry Zambrowski from Sayreville and Bill Tomer from Old Bridge, with help from Bob's old Volkswagen Beatle.
We played some fun but pretty embarrassing golf together as a crew on a regular basis, but I haven't held a club in my hands since.
Bob was best man at my wedding to Gail Phoenix out in Des Moines in 1970. We visited with Bob in South Philly when he was a Navy Corpsman -- an experience akin to combat that utterly changed his outlook on life.
I live in upstate NY with a new family acquired in 2004 when I re-married. My wife and I have 4 children together and 9 grandchildren. We're holding our own.
I'm very sorry to have lost track of Bob over the years, he was a really great friend in that window of time. I remember him moving out to Ohio, and that's about when we lost contact.
Now retired, I found this obituary by accident, and in real sorrow
God bless and keep you and your family.

I wasn't Blessed to have ever met Mr. R Sackett, however my heart, sympathy, and prayers go out to his wife Dr. Ellen Sackett and daughter leslie whom I periodically worked with at baptist Hospital on the oncology unit. may he rejoice in the Kingdom of heaven. As he will always have his eye on his family, and from my personal experience with my son (RIP) never doubt that feeling you feel of his presence. Love and Prayers.

Ellen and family, my thoughts are with you. I know you know this, Ellen, but I want readers to know this about him. I worked with Bob for a short while learning cross-cultural facilitation through the Quan Yin Center/Stirfry Seminars & Consulting in Berkeley, CA. Bob was so insightful and so willing to be vulnerable to the issues of racism and sexism. He made me think and laugh. He was a fine and sensitive soul --- a good person, indeed. He will be missed. I'm sending prayers of healing to you, your daughters, and all of your family. Thank you, Bob. Thank you for touching my soul.
