Virginia Marie Wheeler Button, 97, of Millerton (Jackson Summit), born December 14, 1928, passed away Friday, March 27, 2026, peacefully in her sleep. She was the daughter of the late Earl and Freda Fitzgerald Wheeler of Pine City, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Oliver L. Button, in 2016. She and Oliver owned and operated Button Hill Farms, now a fourth-generation farm, for 50 years.
She was a graduate of Millerton High School class of 1946 and was known many years for gathering her classmates for a luncheon every month. Virginia graduated from Jean Summers Business School in 1947 and was employed by Irving D. Booth, Inc. until 1956. After deciding to stay at home to help on the farm and raise their five children, she also worked at Keck's Meat Plant and then for the Tioga Grange Mutual Fire Insurance Company, retiring as Secretary/Treasurer. She was also well-known in the 4-H circle. Following her several years as a 4-H member, she was 4-H leader of a dairy club in Chemung County. After moving to Tioga County, she became a leader of a horse and dairy club, serving over 25 years as a 4-H leader. Once retired Virginia sat on the Board of Directors for Grange Mutual Insurance Fire Company of Troy writing property and casualty insurance, for a total of 27 years in the insurance industry. In addition to being a member of National Grange, she also served a term on the Tioga County FHA Committee and was a member of the Jackson Center United Methodist Church.
She and Oliver enjoyed dancing and roller skating in their younger days. Virginia loved every one of her family, the farm, and time spent at Button Hill Camp. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, her many flowers, sewing, and traveling. Her legacy will be carried on by her five children and their spouses: Joyce Button, Pine City; Duane and Dani Button, Gillett; Byron and Betsy Button, Tioga; Penny and Tom Ostrander, Millerton; and Craig and Bobbi Button, Millerton. It will continue with her grandchildren: Marisa (Jim) Curry, Texas; Drew Carmen, Troy; Joseph (Stefanie) Button, Tioga; Julie (Luke) Hess, Millerton; Byron (Crystal) Button, Tioga; Trista (Tom) Weed, Elmira; Kyle (Stacey) Ranck, Millerton; Macenzie (Shelby) Button, Millerton; Macory (Jenna) Button, Millerton; Rico Neumann, West Virginia. Her love will be spread through her prized great-grandchildren: Tate, Pyper, Lila and Finn Button; Lily, Charlie, Henry, and Sammy Hess; Sierra, Cayden, and Jonas Button; Delany Carmen; Quinn and J.J. Curry; Josh Weed; Sawyer, Barrett, and Savannah Button; Lincoln Button and his sibling arriving this fall; Theodore Neumann.
Virginia is predeceased by brothers: Sonny and Dick Wheeler, and sister Beverly White, brothers-in-law: Elwin and Charles Button, and sisters-in-law: Eleanor Wodarski, Arlene Button, Myrtle Wheeler, Norma Webster, and Sylvia Crans. She is survived by sisters-in-law: Carol Button, Florida, Lois Wheeler, Gillett, and brother-in-law Wayne White, Murrells, N.C.
Family and Friends are invited to call Wednesday, April 1, from noon to 2 p.m. at Buckheit Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., 637 South Main Street, Mansfield. A funeral service will immediately follow the viewing. Her niece, Kim Snyder, will officiate. Interment will be at the Alder Run Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Virginia's memory can be made to the Tioga County Fair, Dairy Department, P.O.
