Hugh Dugan Obituary
Hugh D. Dugan, 82, of Jim Thorpe, passed away at his home on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023. Hugh was the devoted husband of Margaret (Maggie McHugh) Dugan.
Hugh was born in White Haven on June 11, 1941 to the late Clarence and Helen (Nellie Mooney) Dugan.
He graduated in 1958 from Lehighton High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete, excelling in basketball.
After graduation from Kutztown University, he started his educational career in 1965 in the Weatherly School District as a social studies and math teacher. A year later, he landed his dream job at his alma mater in the Lehighton Area School District as a math and algebra teacher.
Most of his career was spent as an 8th grade teacher at the junior high school, with his colleagues that were like family.
In 1969, he passed his real estate exam and worked as a sales person for Person Real Estate.
He passed his Broker's exam in 1983 and in 1984 opened his first real estate office in Jim Thorpe; Hugh D. Dugan Real Estate, which is still in operation.
Over the past 40 years, besides the main Jim Thorpe office, he opened offices in Penn Forest, Lehighton, Tamaqua, and Palmerton.
Hugh spent many hours cheering on the Eagles, Phillies, and Notre Dame - his favorite sports teams. He enjoyed his weekly trips to the casino with his wife, friends and family. His pride and joy was spending the weekend at the lake house in Lake Harmony.
He loved playing pinochle with his wife and their friends.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Jim Thorpe, where he was a Eucharistic minister. He was a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.
Hugh was the founder and past president of the Lehighton Education and Athletic Foundation (LEAF), where he served as President for eight years. In 1993, he organized and started Educare in the Lehighton Area School District to support students in need. He was a Past President of the Carbon Realtors Association.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Maggie. His four children, Mary, wife of David Figura of Jim Thorpe, Colleen, wife of Joseph Weber of Summit Hill, Kathryn (Katie), wife of Jeff McArdle of Jim Thorpe, and Hugh II and his wife Heidi of Jim Thorpe; his grandchildren, Leah and Anna Figura, Jordan, Christopher, and Megan Weber, Casey McArdle and William and Erin Dugan; his sisters Kay Tibensky, and Rosemary Dugan, both of Lehighton and sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Dugan of White Haven.
He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Dugan of White Haven and a brother-in-law, Joseph Tibensky of Lehighton.
He leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, 180 West Broadway, Jim Thorpe at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26 with Rev. Ronald Minner officiating.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25 and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26 at Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe.

I had him as a teacher at the Lehighton Junior High School. He was definitely a person I credit for playing such an important part in the choice of my career/profession and my success in life. He was a man among men! I had Hugh as a math teacher as well as my first broker when I got my Real Estate license. He taught me the importance of taking a day to "sleep on it" when anything seemingly earth shattering happened in real estate. Sure enough, things always seemed better the next day. Hugh I trust you're definitely in a place where things are looking better. Prayers for Maggie and family for peace as they grieve this leader of their family who set the example of kindness and giving back to everyone he met as well as to his community.
